When we flew out we had a 6 hour delay and ended up landing in Bourgas instead of Plovdiv. for any of you who dont know where Bourgas is, let me tell you its at the other end of the country!! So we had a 7 and a half hour bus journey to get us to Borovets. However everyone on the plane was in such good spirits and everyone just got on with it with little complaint. We missed our first day ski school but when we went at 1pm for our boot fitting and got on the nursery slopes with no sleep from the bus journey the night before, all that was forgotten!! Honestly it didnt really bother us because the whole thing was so good.
We had Ivan for our instructor for the whole week who was totally brilliant. He had us skiing on blue slopes by the end of the week and we were all absolute beginners.
Borovets is a lovely place and a great place to go for your first experience of snow. The food up the mountain is very very expensive so allow for that but it really is amazing. tHe views and the people you meet is fantastic.
Dont expect much from the Bulgarians but remember they are very poor and work very long hours for very little pay so its no wonder they are so unhappy and grumpy.
Have a great holiday and hope you love it as much as we did xxxxxx
im flying from manchester to sofia on sat. Does anyone know if you cant land in sofia, does the flight company arrange your transfer back to Sofia. I havnt gone with a our operator and am gettinga bit worried now
I think they just land you where they can, theres a lot of freezing fog there on the lowlands just now but its really sunny up the mountains. You will land somewhere ant they will transfer you to where you are meant to be going, really no problem you will just be a bit late but we are claiming for that on our insurance. xx
Hi Donna,
Nice report on your holiday..........good to see you got some skiing in and that you were hitting the blue runs by the end of your week
Good stuff
Fiona
what were the snow conditions like, my daughter is coming with me this year and will be in the beginners group so i would be keen to know what the nursery slopes will be like for her, glad you had a good time despite your detour, i have been to boro many times and i think for value its hard to beat
Our flight to Sofia on the 12th Jan from Manchester was diverted to Thessaloniki in Greece (5 hour transfer direct to Borovets.)
We very nearly never made it out of Sofia on the 19th due to fog either!
The pilot told us that although he had been able to land at Sofia (because the runway at Sofia had just been upgraded & so had the Thomsonfly plane) to enable an automatic landing in visibility down to 75 metres, taking off was a different matter - legally 150 metres visibility ...

Fortunately, literally at the last minute the fog lifted enough for us to leave (after sitting on the plane for 2 1/2 hours)
We were told by our ski instructor (George) that Sofia airport was deliberately built in 1946 in a fog prone area by the communists (it was a military airport) to discourage intelligence photography.
Still had a great time overall though
