Two places I ca recommend are...TK Max...pretty much what everyone is saying, cheap with a good selection of decent gear.
There is a place on the A127 where it meets the M25 called R & S Ski. If that's near you give that a go. It's not a shop but someones house....he's converted his barn into a 'shop'. From what I see he buys all the end of season stuff and sells it on. So if you want this seasons colours it's not for you...but if your happy to wear last season's stuff give it a go. ...

I got my fleeces, gloves, hat, goggles from there. Fleeces are Trespass so a good brand. All did the job perfect.
Decathlon is a good shop.....my girlfriend got some of her stuff from there including her jacket and trousers. Queshua or something like that is the brand (there own brand I think) everything did the trick. Wait a while before you go there
As they have all there summer sports gear in at the moment.
A couple of last places....Field and Treck in Brentwood, near the station and although I've not been there there is a Snow & Rock in Chelmsford.
