Which Resort?

Hi everyone, DH, DD (4) and myself were planning on going to Borovets this Jan. but I read tons of bad reviews - shabby, cheap, rip-off, gondolas and lifts closed all the time, peep-shows and waitresses dressed as hookers, you name it!- so then I looked up Bansko (construction site, stray dogs, accommodation not actually on the mountain) and finally saw some nice words about Pamporovo, which we never considered. So where do we go? DH is an absolute beginner, I'm an intermediate skier and DD ...

So where do we go? DH is an absolute beginner, I'm an intermediate skier and DD will not be skiing this winter, so we're looking for a family-friendly place, but not one that's absolutely dead apres-ski.
Thanks!

re: Which Resort?

Borovets is great. Am going back wi the wife and 2 girls (8 and 10) for the 3rd time in Jan.
Yeah its a little rough around the edges, but me thinks prob like that in the other resorts.
Pick a small hotel like the Ela and everything will be fine.
Recommend Boro with out hesitation.

re: Which Resort?

Well that made it easier Smile Kidding, thanks all for the replies! It's always so hard to decide anything based on reviews you read: people have such different expectations to begin with you never know what to think. But if people with families have gone to Borovets multiple times I guess it's not as bad as I was lead to believe. Pamporovo sounds good too but it's a bit far for us since we're driving there. Thanks again everyone. Cheers!

re: Which Resort?

Both resorts are fine.
been with son when betwen 7 and 10 years old.

Nonsense about hookers - not in your face - I certainly didnt see any !! But I wasnt looking !! Might be better asking some of the single blkes that go , eh Tim.

Borovets best for skiing , but Pamps a prettier resort.
You will enjoy either

re: Which Resort?

I must stand up and argue for Bansko.

I am heading back there in February for the third time. Although not on the actual mountain, the Gondola trip up (30 min Approx) is a superb experience each day, and makes the Ski home all the better. From the gondola stop to the bottom, (at the Gondola station) is about 7km of a ski home and is great fun for beginners, especially if you are in a group.

There are plenty of lifts etc to take you further up the mountain from the Gondola stop. I would estimate close to 20km from top of mountain to bottom, a great run!!

Mainly Blue & Red runs, makes Banko an ideal venue for beginners. The black runs you see from the Gondola going up are rarely used...They put the fear of God into me, but someday I will try one!!!!

On arrival at the bottom of the mountain, & once your ski's are returned to the hire place, there is a fabulous bar/pub infront of you called 'Happy End' for your apres ski. Food & Drink here are excellent and great service is also given. This also turns into a disco bar after 9.00pm.

The food and drink on the mountain is quiet cheap also, and there are plenty of places to stop. The higher up the mountain you go, the less busy these places will be.

We are staying at the Kempinski again this year, which is at the top of the town, beside the gondola station, the ideal spot in my opinion. There are plenty of restaraunts around the town, plenty of pubs, and at least one night club, & strip club (Men Only!!!).

Food & drink are dirt cheap around the town especially near the statues, cant remember what the are called....Something to do with the alphabet!!!
