Winter clothing.

Hello all,
My husband and I are going on our first skiing holiday, with my sons family, leaving on Saturday.
We are both senior citizens, but still like to keep active.
We have just been worried about our clothing for skiing. We have ski trousers and lovely anoraks, hats and gloves, but do we need to wear jumpers / extra layers underneath.A friend told Joe, my husband ,that he should wear 2 jumpers at least under his anorak and 3 pairs of socks to keep out the cold.We will be wearing ...

Thanks very much, Mary & Joe O'Connor

re: Winter clothing.

To be honest the temps are'nt that cold in Bulgaria, as you are beginners you will find you will be warm exercising. Wear one pair of ski socks only, more than one pair might bring on blisters. I find that one tee shirt, one medium fleece and a ski jacket is generally enough. Gloves are essential not just for the cold, but essential protection if you fall on icey snow (even if feel warm dont take gloves off when skiing). Sun glasses are essential as is sun cream

Hi Mary
I really feel the cold,so I wear ski thermals, a polo neck and a fleece under my jacket. I also wear salopettes, one pair of socks, a hat, gloves and glove liners. I also take an extra fleece 'just in case'. It varies with individuals - my hubby never wears as many layers as me and he's fine.
You can buy some handwardmers - little warming packs that slot inside your gloves. These are good to take in your pocket in case your hands start to get chilly later in the day. Goggles ...

Hi Mary

You could buy some good thermals, which are light and comfortable to wear without bulking. We wear sports undergarments/skins, which are very good and silky finish or buy traditional thermals like M & S sell. They can be washed and tried over night. Try Sports World, Decathalon, JJB etc.

The skins leggings can also be used on long haul flights to prevent deep vein thrombosis, if you like travelling.

You don't say where you are going, but most places in Bulgaria will have places selling hot drinks with seating, just check prices before ordering.

Have a great time and don't forget to take something like Deep Freeze, Arnica etc for bruises Exclamation Very Happy Very Happy

Lighter clothes the better. A thermal sports top is great and maybe a fleece over it if you think you'll be standing around as you can always take it off(small backpack is good as you can put a top in it if you are too hot/cold). Gloves are a must.
Hope you enjoy your holiday.

One of my favourite items at the minute is my neckwarmer. It can be pulled right up over your face when on the lift to keep the cold out. I know a balaclava does much the same job but they are difficult to wear with a helmet.

re: Winter clothing.

I went to Bulgaria as a beginner skier expecting to be cold all the time as I have a condition called Raynauds which means I have v poor circulation in my hands and feet and they go completely numb if i don't keep them warm! However I didn't get cold or go numb at all because the excercise keeps you warmed up.

I wore thermal sports underwear, salopettes, a long sleeved t-shirt, medium fleece and jacket and gloves. Most days I was too warm and had to take the fleece off so my backpack was really useful. It's also a good idea to carry an extra fleece/jumper just in case. The temp is colder if you go up to the top so you'll need a hat and I took a neckwarmer which was invaluable as Nicky thinks.

Get some good ski socks, they do cheap ones in tk maxx, just wear one pair and they'll be fine, my feet never got cold. Also sunglasses and goggles if it's snowy.

Hope you have a great time!

re: Winter clothing.

Are me and my son barking compared to the rest of you I only wear a t-shirt under my jacket and Logan wears a footie kit and we have never been cold. We don't even wear scarves or hats just headbands to keep our ears warm if its a bit chilly. I have pics of Logan skiing and boarding last yeaar wearing his footie top and ski trousers with no jacket at all. Cool

re: Winter clothing.

Ahh but Dona, you and Logan are speed merchants and are well past the stage of standing around for your turn on the beginner slopes Very Happy Very Happy

Hopefully it will not be too hot next week for the chance of more snow.

Sports skins/thermals also work in reverse - they help cool the body down when it's hot and let sweat escape. Can also use the docker's old trick of wearing ladies tights underneath - great fun watching men trying to get tights on Exclamation Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Dear friends,
thanks very much for your kind words of advice.
We are bound for Prampooroa on Saturday and are very excited, and half scared to death as well.
Take good care of yourselves,
