Nothing but praise for ellis brigham, really helpful with my snow boots (not purchased) and all clothing aspects and with carolines (TD) boot selection, fitting and footbeds they were second to none!
i will be hiring ski books in bansko once i get to bulgaria, what are the rental guys like over there? do they spend a bit of time trying to find a good fit for you?? i remember ho much it dampers the experience if your in pain and cant walk anywhere in the boots!
when im fitting my boots at tthe ski rental what sort of thing should i be looking out for? - space to move in the toes or tight to the calves...? whats the best adjustment..?
I had pains in the insides of my knees following having my boots fitted as they corrected my position (I walk on the outsides of my feet and the insoles made me stand on my feet evenly). The pain was the chronic ache that you get in your teeth when you have a brace fitted. I persevered (with ibruprofen gel!), and my skiing improved no end. It took a couple of hours a day for the whole week for my legs / feet to grasp the idea, but I am so grateful now I wish I could afford to do the same ...

Obviously if you are having a different sort of pain you need to get it sorted.
