Nowhere near the number of trips as Pete but couldn't agree more. If it was the 'norm' it wouldn't be in the newspapers!
Have been to Borovets two years in a row now (with kids now 9 & 7) and have seen nothing - I did hear that a black limousine turned up at one point during the week this year outside one of the bars. I live in the relatively sleepy hollow of Swindon (not too far from yourself Pete, I believe) and without doubt passed more 'gangsters' and drug dealers on the way to work ...

More black limos here than in Borovets.
Many round here do their Crimbo shopping in Bristol - you know the place where a cabby was stabbed to death at 11 in the morning this week, teenagers shot etc..etc.... Am now watching something on TV about a 'fireraiser' in Hull.
I am not deliberately playing any issues down, just trying to put it all in perspective. We have had two of the best holidays in our lives in Borovets.
I can honestly say that, in our experience, your kids won't be subjected to anything. I do appreciate your concerns, I would have the same, but whatever there is going on 'behind the scenes', there is no 'exposure'.
In the Rila I noticed a couple of 'extravagantly' dressed women, I didn't even notice them this year when we stopped for a couple of drinks whilst the kids were night skiing.
They were exposed to more bad language from British holidaymakers (of their own age) than ...

I don't work for the Bulgarian tourist board - although if there are any positions going which will give me more holidays I'm up for it!

Simon,
I'd be very surprised if you notice anything, even if you go looking for it.
I've been to Borovets three times. The first year, I was single, stayed out late, and yes did notice certain "late night people". The following year, very hard to spot, the year after that, even harder. I had/have no qualms at all about taking my new wife and step daughter to Bulgaria. There really is no need to worry. She wasn't worried for a second, probably because neither was I.
Take the family, you will have one of the best holidays of your life, I PROMISE you.
Banknote
Well I have only been to Pamps once and I have seen 'ladies of the night' and I have seen their 'minders' but no gangsters but then again I didn't go into their local. I am saving that for my next trip.
I was out as a lad on my own and was approached by the girls but when I told them I was happily married they did leave me alone so no bother there. No bother from their minders either. To believe that there is no 'Gangster' involvement over there is a bit naive to say the least.

It is everywhere in Eastern Europe as well as in the West. The main point is that they don't bother the tourists. They like the tourists they bring money in which is what organised crime thrives on.
The only dodgy bloke Banknote met was the chap who took his daughter bumboarding and bumped her head on the ice - yep that was my hubby!!
We have been twice with the kids now aged 7 & 9. They love Borovets and so do we. We let them play out on the slopes at night, on their own while we sat in the bar by the lovely log fire supping hot wine! I certainly would not subject my children to anything risky and we have always felt perfectly safe there.

It was a joy to walk down the street last year and be recognised by local people who had seen us 12 months previously. Where else do you get that. I'm lucky if the same people I pass in the street day in, day out give me the time of day.
