I honestly wouldn't worry about it. Take London for example; how much gangster activity goes on every day and yet do we see it - no. Every country in the world has mafoia/gangster activity and Bulgaria is no different. Seriously, don't worry about it. I have not ever heard of the gangsters/mafia confronting any of the tourists or anything for that matter. If ever they are in the resorts (I have NEVER seem them) they will always keep to themselves and not interfere with the tourists.

The ski resorts in Bulgaria are in many ways much better than the more popular central/western european ski resorts and A LOT cheaper. More than that I have found the holiday REALLY fantastic and trouble free which is why I keep going back; and believe me

Read ALL the reviews on this forum from people that have either been to Borovets before or who have just come back and you will see that they are ALL very positive and little or no mention of gangster/mafia activity. Borovets is the biggest and busiets of the Bulgaria ski resorts and if they are ablew to have such positive reviews then that says something. Personally, I prefer the less touristy areas wherever I go which is why I am going to Bansko. But that is the same for every country that I go to.

More decreet than in any town in the UK. Unless anyone is actively looking for them you will not even know they are there.

Well, I've never come accross 'Gangsters' in Bulgaria, and I have been there Summer and Winter 22 times.

Imagine if you did not live in England (presuming you do) and look at the headlines in OUR newpapers.

I totally understand your concern as people have been over-reacting to a fued between 2 gangs of lads. But it was dealt with swiftly and very few in the resort even knew it had happened. Plus the fact that this happened 4 hours drive away from where you are staying. Thats the same as if there were a problem in Bristol when you are staying in Leeds

I will be there with my wife and dozens, yes dozens of friends who are taking kids and none of us have any concerns whatsoever.

My comments are not intended to mislead you, nor to talk the issue down, I am merely trying to state the truth that you and your family will be as safe in Bulgaria as you are in your own home.
