re: helmet on the slopes

I was wiped out by a russian last year and almost had a ski implanted in my temple in the process. I now have a helmet, it's strange because you actually feel safer as soon as it's clipped on.

I am a qualified motorcycle training instructor and also work for the ambulance service. Helmets more often than not DO save lives, as Pete mentioned earlier.

For me it was the russian/close encounter, my friend just sensible. We'll be on harder reds and blacks this year with ski school, i can foresee a fall or two. My head is important to me!

But helmet or not, I hope everyone has an enjoyable safe holiday Very Happy

re: helmet on the slopes

Hi Toby, just back from Austria where the accident was big news and the discussion is very alive Wink
I still ski without a helmet but what I saw on the slopes was that almost ALL of the helmet owners were skiing very fast and straight down. Now this is not my skistyle but I believe that wearing a helmet can make you feel as a skicowboy with no fear coz' "the helmet will protect me"..;
I don't think this is the right attitude to buy one Crying
Maybe in the future I buy one but not now. My ...

re: helmet on the slopes

I started using one when ski-ing with wheelchair users in Sweden (they ski in karts or or monoskis). It is compulsory for buddies to wear them, so I have bought one and will use it next time ski-ing independently

re: helmet on the slopes

Having read some of these posts am wondering whether my little kamikaze (aged Cool should possibly be wearing a helmet especially as he is now skiing black runs regularly and snowboarding. Never really thought about it before as I mentioned earlier. Got a few weeks to make my mind up Question Question

Aye the better you get the faster you go an the more you need a helmet. Im sure many of the ski hire shops will throw in a helmet if you ask. The ski shop in Bansko that I always use generaly does if you ask.

I had an accident in Bansko last year and banged my head good and proper !

I wasn't wearing a helmet and as a result of my vanity(thought I looked like a muppet) I ended up spending 3 nights in Razlog hospital with a severe concussion.

It took 9 months to recover fully from post concussion syndrome and I have only just gone back to work in my old capacity as memory problems made it impossible to do my usual job safely.

It's been a bit of a nightmare to be honest, and it could have ...

re: helmet on the slopes

Defo helmet for me and my wife this time round...as mentioned before, keeps the head warm but more importantly I value my health and that of my wife.
