Steve,
I think most places will hire them for you, although I am not sure of the cost. Last year TK Max were selling them at a reasonable price, although they are a bit bulky for your case. In my receeding case, it would stop my head getting burnt.

My advice on this is the same every year. BUY ONE!

Don't risk your childs safety by hiring one that could be a poor fit or even damaged.

It's a small price to pay for their well-being.

As Pete says, buy one. Don't compromise your child's safety and well-being.

I've always bought my boys' helmets through ebay - search for ski or sknowboard helmet, and then search the shops. You can buy through ebay or contact them direct. They cost about £20 plus £5 delivery and arrive by courier the following day, all boxed up and brand new. Our nearby TKMaxx never had any the right size when I went in, and a store close by that sells them at the full price is too expensive. ...

You find out the size by putting a tape measure round the child's head, and all the website shope have info which tells you that between 52-55cm is medium, etc. A helmet fits into an average depth suitcase, but make sure it's fairly rigid and pad it for protection. Or you could put it in your carry-on bag, but we pack ours in the checked luggage.

I've got a couple of outgrown ones in the garage - but they'll go in the skip next time I get one. With borrowed or rented helmets you never know how it's been treated before you get it - whether it's been dropped on concrete, hit a tree or pylon, been used as a football, etc. And just think of the sweaty heads that may have been in there! Ewww! Anyway, I wouldn't risk it.
