how long will it take to learn

going on beginners course as not ski'd before, Im quite a fast learner. On average, how quick can you pick up the basics, enough so you u dont have to go to the pre-booked lessons if u dont want. I will prob go for first 3 days deffinate, but if pick up how to start, stop and turn, would I be OK to give the afternoons a miss and go off on my own (well, with girlfriend)

re: how long will it take to learn

That all depends on you Jon. I know people who have skied for 10 years and still can't get out of the snowplough turning - others seem to be bombing it after 3 days.

Enjoy being a beginner - it only happens once Razz

re: how long will it take to learn

Id say yes as long as you stick to safe runs, HOWEVER if the conditions are as bad as im led to believe then i would suggest you stay with your group.
Its funny to fall over in nice powder but if you bash your head on the ice or take a wrong call and hit a child skiing you could cause serious injury to your self and others.
See how you and the weather get on.

re: how long will it take to learn

I learnt to ski in Boro 4 years ago, stuck with my instructor all week and had a fantastic time, went back the year after and had a diifferent instuctor, he couldn't belive i had been a beginner the year before.

My advise is listen to your instructor and do everthing they tell you, they will let you know if your ready to ski with your girlfriend or not.

Hi Jon,
Have just returned from our first skiing holiday, had leasons all week and one thing that will depend on how quick you will progress, all depends on how good your ski instructor is. We were very lucky and had an excellent instructor, he had us going down a red run by our 2nd day and a black run on our 4th day.
If you are not happy with your instructor ask to move groups, remember you will learn a lot from a good instructor, so make the most of instruction this holiday, after all ...

re: how long will it take to learn

I'd advise that you get an hours lesson in the UK before you go. I don't think Dry Slopes are very good at all (espescially for learners - you'll progress much quicker on snow) but getting use to wearing boots, not falling over your skis while you're standing up etc. are all things you can do in this country. No point wasting the first morning of your holiday doing the super-basic-basics if you can avoid it!

I'm sure you'll be doing front-flips off moguls after your third day ...

re: how long will it take to learn

hey gibbo, were you actually skiing down the red and black runs or ploughing down them. dont wanna sound like a knob but there nothing worse than going at speed on a black and having to use begginers as slalom poles then get bollocked for not being considerate.
