knee discomfort

I had a fall last week in pamps that made my knee click before my ski binding released. I used iboprofun to get rid of the ache, just a niggle, nothing major otherwise i wouldn't have continued to ski for the last 3 days. It was fine but yesterday and today it has started to ache again and sometimes i get like a short sharp stab through it, even when doing nothing at all.

It doesn't hurt when i walk though?

Anyone got any ideas what i may have done or has it happened to anyone else ...

re: knee discomfort

It might be bursitis or housemaids knee as it used to be called. Which is where the synovial pads in the joint swells slightly to protect the parts within the joint capsule. It may be that the ligaments, tendons and/or bones in your knee are just "miffed" by the sudden exercise of your holiday and the fall and have decided to swell. Go steady on it and keep using the ibruprofen gel, it nothings improves in a week see your local nurse or GP. Very Happy x

re: knee discomfort

My advice is to go to the specialist and let some piccies taken, maybe its the same as me (4 years ago) and you have to do some special exercices for your knee to make it strong again ( and wear a brace everytime you gonna ski.
I skied also the other days after my fall but went I got out of my car (on old mini so very low to the ground) a few weeks later I almost felt so something was not right Wink
Check it out!

re: knee discomfort

I had a smilar problem, not from skiing but from playing football regularly, and I found it was one my knee ligaments that were at a point of snapping( had to stop playing for 5 months, but been sound since) its not a nice feeling, and I would defo recommened going to see your local GP if the pain continues! Bad knee's are the worst thing possible. Booze

re: knee discomfort

Hmm, i hope it's nothing serious... will def see about it... don't mind wearing a brace for skiing if will help keep the knee strong cos i love to ski and will never give it up if can avoid it!

You still ski tanjette which is always a good sign. How bad was your fall? I just felt my knee click before the binding released Confused

re: knee discomfort

hiya Rach, I think it was the same..
my knee was 'hanging' only 1/3 together (not ligaments but don't know the english word for it- sorry) and normally my leg had to be in plaster but because I waited it was a brace for 6 weeks. ahum.
On the other side I feel that Im skiing better with that brace on but maybe its all in my head, who knows.. Very Happy
Don't worry, the higher you go in a skigroup the more braces you see at the end of the day (when they take the boots and braces off!!)

re: knee discomfort

I am a doctor and from your description it sounds like you may have slightly damaged your meniscus (the fatty pads in teh knee joint). It is unlikely that you have damaged a ligament as this type of injury usually results in immediate massive swelling. It is also unlikely to be bursitis, as these injuries require repetitive minor stresses (the house maids knee or vicars knee).

Meniscus injury characteristically takes longer to develop, hence the delay in the pain starting often 24hrs ...

It is also a possiblity you may have just strained the ligament, this is an incomplete tear.

It does not sound serious but it is definitely worth getting an opinion from your GP who can refer you to a specialist if needs be. Little things can become big things if we ignore them.

Hope it gets better soon.

re: knee discomfort

wow... thanks guys... and sam (so many big words lol), it did take about 24 hours before i felt any pain whilst out there mind.

How does this meniscous thing work then? Does it just go away over time or need any treatment? I'll see if I can get to gp or minor injuries unit tomorrow (my GPs often fully booked!)

Would a support bandage prove helpful? Think i've got one of them around if it would?
