Lion Mehana in basement of Lion Hotel. Not cheap about average prices but food and service are excellent

snow was good last week, not sure if it will stand the sun this week, but hope it does....
its very very hot at the mo, no need for any thermals at all, in fact you could ski in a T-shirt Very Happy take plenty of sun cream and make sure you put some on your lips mine are so burnt....
loads of nice places to eat, but always always always stick to the menu, do not let them offer you anything not on the menu, you will be stung for a hefty bill, friends of ours paid 90 lev for wine, wine was not on ...

head to the old town to the traditional mehanas, the one with the red neon BBQ sign near the square is good, has a spit roast outside and they do traditional dancing later on in the evening.

chubbakanov han is good, but you must be careful what you order and ensure you know the price first... Confused lots of bulgarians go there, and it has a good atmosphere.

if you walk down tothe old town just past the church is an estate agent called Adress (or something like that. go down the alley there the first thre restuarants on your left are the best i have found. The first called bi koste (but that is written in bulgarian) just downstairs a bit , all wood with a tree in the middle. the second is big. cant remember name but it is right in the corner. the alley goes right there and the next is another 25 yards called starya komita ( again in bulgarian) ...

it is 1.50 leva a beer in all three and although the one in the middle seems a little more expensive on the menu , the dishes are huge, so good value.

have a good time

There is one opposite the hotel Strazhite, with a little cardboard cutout of a chef! you go in a courtyard to the resturant, we found this cheap and vry good, they cook all the food infront of you on a bbq fire x

I would suggest anything not on the main drag. Try and find something older and traditional, walk off the main drag, down some side streets and you will find some very cheap and very good mehanas.

re: places to eat in Bansko

We had a good meal last week in a steakhouse on the main walk down town towards the central squares, I cant remeber the name of the place, it's the second steak house you pass not the first and has a bigger green beer sign above it, they did a special offer of half duck with a glass of wine for only 17 lev, so that's about £6.50 and the half duck was massive, too much for us to eat and very tender underneath with nice crispy skin and orange sauce.

Also, we ate at a mehana on the main stretch, it's on the left as you walk into town, pass the lion pub and first mehana on left after the road junction, there's a gate into a courtyard and the restaurants at the back of the courtyard, we had lunch for 6ppl there with a couple of soft drinks each, only £18 total bill. We had a "sache" which was a hot griddle that came with meat and vegetables sizzling on it, very nice, and also a "kavarma" either pork or chicken whch is very tasty but a bit greasy if you have a sensitive stomach!

Hope this advice helps.

Yes if you go into the old town and keep to the right there are many little alleys with small local resturants, these are usually the best and at the cheapest price to :-)
