I skied for about six years and then learnt to snowboard
I much prefer snowboarding, but the first year was very painful and I'm not sure if I wasn't already a convert to snow holidays (from the years skiing) that I would have stuck it out.
My brother tried snowboarding at the same time as me (having skied for the same amount of time) and hated it.
My partner started snowboarding with me last year. Having never skied and also thinking he hated the snow. But he loved it.

So all I can say it's a personal thing, but we're putting his daughter on skies rather than a board for her first holiday as I'm hoping it'll be a little less painful than starting to board and she'll then want to stick it out for another couple of years.
If you're brave and you don't mind pain and bruises, go for the boarding.
If you want a more gentle start, go for the skiing
Either way you'll have loads of fun and meet loads of great people.
I've done the opposit and boarded for 6 year then tried skiing last year. Enjoy both but doing skiing again this year as want to get good at it. It's definately a lot easier & quicker to learn to ski, and you're a lot faster on the pistes when on skis. Boarding's much more fun mucking about off-piste. Agree with someone earlier who said don't learn to board on a dry slope - I did and picked up the biggest bruises I've had in my life!
Hey, Just come back from Pamporova... Wes spent the week snowboarding and loved every minute, by the end of the week we were all grinding and on the jumps, its fantastic! I have been skiing and boarding is miles more fun, pick up the basics before you go and you'll be laughing!
No contest.....boarding!!!!
Have a go at both as some people suggest. Dont label yourself a skiier or boarder- after all they are just different ways of achieving the same thing- getting down a snow covered hill with a smile on your face !
I teaching skiing but hardly ever use them- I use my board more. while you are at it try cross country also-but give ski jumping a miss !
Biggest thing is enjoy
i skied for ten years before trying snowboarding..found boarding hard n painful the first year but stuck at it and enjoy boarding much more now,, skiing is easier to pick up but i have more fun on a board and you look far cooler ..lol
Just to get my £'s worth in... try Ski Boarding (or Blades) if you prefer. Learning curve faster than skiing, but style and fun factor more like boarding.
At the end of the day, it doesn't matter which you do, just as long as you are out there, doing it, and having fun !!!!
I've just got back from pamps, I'd never done either before but gave boarding a go ............... fantastic! After giving boarding a go and watching the beginners learning to ski, boarding seems harder to pick up basics, but easier once you've got the basics mastered (hope that makes sense). As someone said above be prepared for a battering though, the beginning of the week is hard but well worth it! Anyway all that said skiing loks real gay and there's always the ...
