at the metro ski show in london, i was taken by the growing number of people offering some sort of gps linked unit. Whats the concensus of opinion? the best one i saw was a gadget you hire, linked to a gps phone and it gave you height speed distance etc, the alternative seemed to be a unit you wear all day and then get a print out in glorious colour of where youve been distance covered etc etc, thing is it worked out at about £15 a day which seemed a bit dear.........
£15 is a lot of money mate when you can just look at a piste map.
I'm quite happy with a transceiver and a mob or radio and at a push a helmet camera.
I know where I ski and I know when I'm going fast.
Thats just me though.
Fraser, the computer linked ones are pretty awesome. At the end of the day you can see on a 3d model of the mountain exactly where you have been. To see it is pretty fascinating.
As you say it can give you all sorts of data with top speed and total meters skied (for the day) being a couple that can turn into a daily challenge.
You can hire them in most big resorts or as part of packages - I saw them advertised at 28 euro a day recently in Austria. Not sure I'd bother, but then I said I'd live without a Tom Tom too...
Some times all these gadgets can take the fun out of sport, use your senses and have a little bit of adventure. A couple of weeks ago I was driving from Edinburgh to Glasgow, a journey me and my mate have done hundreds of times, but he decides to bring along his tomtom.
I pulled out of my streets as I normally do and turned left, the tomtom told me to turn right. My mate then got upset because I didn't do what the silly machine told me to.
Sometimes you've just got to follow your nose.
