re: snow canons

Last year there were 3 snow cannons on the green run leading down to Studenets, but they didnt see much use while we were there since it snowed every day!

re: snow canons

Let me first give you the low-down on Snow Cannons.

They work by propelling water spray into the air that then falls as snow.

They can only operate at ideal temperatures - that is from -3 to -10.

Any warmer and the water will not freeze, any colder then it falls as ice.

I was in Killington earlier this year and most of the slopes had cannons every 20 yards. This meant they were very effective when used.

To have 3 or 4 cannons throughout a resort is of no use whatsoever with regards to maintaining general skiing conditions. The ones they do have are for producing a snow half-pipe for the boarders.

To think that 4 cannons are going to make any difference to miles and miles of slopes is completely out of the question - so it's the real thing or not at all guys.

re: snow canons

Pete,

Actually you are wrong about snow machines Wink

They can make snow well above freezing. They dont generally do it as it not efficient.

It is not the cold air that make the water droplets freeze but them expanding/evaportaing so quickly Cool

re: snow canons

an obvious question...how do they get the water to the cannons???...surely if they used pipes it would freeze
