Hi Paul, we have a set of Uniden walkie talkies. I have used them in Bansko and found them very effective. I have two teenage sons and because they are better than us "Old Uns" we were able to keep intouch all day, even when we were in the pub at the bottom and they were still at the top. Argos has them on page 987 price £99.95. We bought ours 3 years ago for about £70. When are you going? We go again 13th Jan. Have a safe ski
hi jip going out on 6th jan for 1 week went last year same week amazing value for money, it was that good bought an apartment should be ready in july so many more holidays in bansko to come.
As an alternative you could consider buying a local sim card. BG calls are very cheap and you get great reception in the mountains. You will need to have your phone unlocked first and this can cost between £1.99 for a Nokia to £ 20 for a Motorola Razr.
The sim cards cost as much as there is credit on them so no cost involved really. Any of the locals will be able to show you how to add credit to the sims.
We purchased Uniden radios in Bulgaria {GMR635-2CK} have a radius of 6 mile, 22 channel, not required to register them for 63.OO leva.Anyone bringing radios over with them or if you meet new friends on the slopes who also have radios, you can be in contact with them.
In Borovets, I found out that if my hubby was skiing up top at the Markujik runs and I was on the Yastrebets runs there was no connection due to the mountain range.Above all, they were great and only an initial cost to purchase ...

I bought a pair of Motorola PMR446 (I think?) which is a licence-free frequency and find that they work quite well as long as there is a general line of sight i.e. no mountains in the way. Our ski instructor also had a two-way radio but for some reason my radio couldn't pick up his frequency. A bit annoying.
