Going to borovets in feb and this time would like to take some walkie talkies to keep in touch with the rest of the family. Have bought cheap ones before which were useless. Can anyone recommend any that actually work over there I've seen Midland ones with a 13 mile range, has anyone tried these?
I have a feeling that you would run into issues with licensing with anything that has that sort of range, as it will be transmitting on frequencies that are not necesarily legal without a licence.
If you are really desperate to keep in touch, use a radio on high band (motorola or similar cheap radio - these now have ranges up to 8 km), and if that doesn't work use your mobile !!!
Sorry...
as an after-thought, I should point out that all walkie talkie radios (whatever the frequency) can have real problems with ski resorts. This is due to the terrain - all distance estimates are based on line of sight conditions (transmision between 2 points with nothing in between). Ski resorts are very rairly flat or unobscured terrain, so poor reception is often experienced.

I am part of the local Mountain Rescue in the North of England, and we have enough problems using the specialised frequencies and equipment that are set aside for police, and ambulance services, in the mountainous terrain that we work in.
I wasn't jopking when I suggested your mobile. I knoe that the service quality abroad often far excedes the poor network capabilities that we have in the UK, and have found that this is often the best way to stay in touch !!!
You will not into any difficulties that i can assure you just get the midland ones as i used them last year and they were brill and i didnt get any one trying to issue me with a lawsuit!
Get a grip sshayes!!!
Thank you Robo.... I was just pointing out, that as guests in such a wonderful country, we should perhaps be aware of the laws and restrictions imposed within the area we are visiting...
I understand your concern for the laws etc but for us it is a good and cheap way of keeping in contact with each other as we all used our mobiles last year and it cost a fortune and we were not the only ones using them and we were never warned not to.
Another thing you mention is the terraine and you may not get a reception and i have to agree with you but the same goes for mobiles as on certain parts of the mountains you cannot get reception no matter how hard you try.
We used legal walkies last year - not that great.... though I think that was mainly because my dad got the 'best bargain' on e-bay. We ended up using mobiles - just try to keep thigs concise and leave chatter until you meet up and that should keep costs down.
