Nikwax is fantastic, the Tech Wash cleans it and then you use the TX Direct Wash for waterproofing as Steve said. To activate the waterproofing you just bung it in the tumble dryer. This stuff also keeps technical fabrics breathable.

Never wash ski gear in ordinary wash.
Millets and other stores sell a tech wash and a proofer.
One has green lid the other purple. wash gear in washing machine with tech wash and then proof it same way.
Hope this helps

Sorry missed this the first time around. You can wash your jacket as normal and then soak it a fabric softner such as lenor. This give you some of the best water proofing around. I use it all the time for mountain climbing gear.

Hi guys, I work for a company which makes washing machines so talk detergent for a living. Please please don't use normal washing detergent on waterproof gear and definitely stay well clear of any fabric softner. Using soap flakes is ok but the best stuff is the proper technical wash you buy in the outdoor shops.

Kitty's rule of thumb. If you bring your jacket out of the wash and it's dripping, it's still waterproof. It's not dripping you need to do some nikwax (other products are available). I dunno. I have a waterproof workcoat., regularly washed with stergene, low temperature. Still fine after four years.

re: washing ski jacket

is your ski gear supposed to be waterproof??

gentle wash and a couple of tennis balls is all thats required to get it all looking like new...no powder or tablets.
