1st Aid Stuff

It's our first trip skiing and thought I should do the sensible Mum thing and put together a small first aid kit.
Between 4 of us we are quite accident prone and in the last few years have managed 1 broken arm,two broken wrists, 1 snapped cruciate ligament and numerous sprains and torn muscles ( oh god that sounds bad should we really be going skiing?)
Any hints on useful stuff to take for minor aches and pains that are likely to happen?
Cheers Smile

I know ! I'm only just back up and running this last year after surgery to re- construct ligament in knee so definately don't want to do it again.I know it' s a classic skiing injury.

Thanks Paul - spent yesterday turning the house upside down looking for those so easy to lose, new little plastic cards that have replaced the E111 forms.

a good thing to take is deep heat, paracetamol and dont forget anti inflammatories for those sprains strains etc but not asprin that will just make you bruise like a peach. and seriously find someone to teach you how to fall properly, sounds crazy in many circumstances it will limit how much it you will hurt yourself. its not a case if you fall its when and how often Very Happy part of the pleasure. oh if you do sprain something have swelling etc most hotels have ice - take a few empty clear ...

have a great holiday its a little hard learning at first but once you start to get it you cant beat it.

I too have an accident prone family - two previous ski trips (before Pamporovo on 30th December), have brought back a knee ligament and 2 broken arms from those 2 trips! This time in Pamporovo one son broke a wrist snowboarding on day 2 (1st Jan)....

First up should be good a insurance policy - make sure it covers winter sports and look at the exclusions because some policies don't cover things like toboganning etc. Know what your excess is because that is the minimum you will be ...

First up should be good a insurance policy - make sure it covers winter sports and look at the exclusions because some policies don't cover things like toboganning etc. Know what your excess is because that is the minimum you will be charged (for us it was £50 and we were charged a flat 145 levs).

The Euro insurance card is not fully in use yet in Bulgaria, I was told that it is used only at the hospitals, and certainly we could not use ours at the Medical Centre we went to. Take your insurance documents as they need to photocopy them.

I took plenty of arnica (for bruises and general aches and pains, also shock), arnica bruise cream - wonderful stuff even if you don't really believe in homeopathy!, rhus tox forsprains, symphytum (known as knitbone in the olden days) for broken bones. We used them all!

In addition I took several packs of paracetamol and ibuprofen, plus ibuprofen pain relief gel, and finally pack of blister plasters which were the only thing we didn't use.

I also took a portable dvd player and several dvds purchased in blockbuster's sale - these proved invaluable keeping my son occupied in the mornings when I continued to ski. I then spent the afternoons with him.
So be prepared, just in case!!

Good luck and have a great trip!

Thanks for that - have to admit to being stretched off from my final run of my final lesson at the Snowdome last October. Was told by the instructor if I made it down from the top "slow and under control " I would have passed. So developed brain freeze forgot how to turn and hit the wall.My husband reckons I was just attention seeking - it was a small compensation to be surrounded by instructor's and having my legs felt Wink
I am expecting to fall over a lot so learning the art of falling would ...
