Does anybody know if there are any of the homes near pamporovo. Watched the programme last night and gurned my lamp out at the plight of the children. Hubby and son are skiing so I will be at a loose end for the week. If there was one of the homes near pamps I would try to make a personal visit to deliver some educational stuff to them.

I didnt see the programme last night but according to work colleagues it was horrific, the orphanages around Shiroko Laka are not the worst. Does anyone know exactly where these orphanages are?
If I was going to shiroka luka how far away is it from pamps, would it be expensive to get a taxi there and would I need some sort of special permission to visit the children?

Sorry but I can not see what you will achieve by visiting, if you want to help do more research and start fund raising. Also you have no idea how seeing first hand will effect you, seeing it on tv is one thing but in real life is another, these programmes are well edited plus you dont get the smells and the noices. If you want to do something think long term not a day trip while your skiing.
Would it not be better to go and visit, and take toys, books, clothes, whatever, than to sit there tucked up nice and cosy in your hotel room and say, oh, I better not go because what I see might offend my sensibilities??
sorry but these children need more help than a few toys and they have no or little human contact that they possibly would not know what to do with them, its the long term effects it has on people and you dont know what that will be. I am sorry I have very strong feelings on these issues and turning up with a few toys and blankets really isnt going to change anything, As dave wrote they need medical supplies and someone in charge who gives a dame,
Every little bit helps so dont tell anyone not to go the orphanage, we all know they need a lot of big time help - staffing, medical care etc. These kids face light up when they are given one sweet, as for the Directors they are not all bad. Shiroka Laka is only about 20 mins from Pamporovo and there are 2 orphanages one for the babies which is in excellent condition, the other one is in need of a lot of time and money spent on it.
I am sure that they do need an awful lot more than that. But if no one knows the story, and you tell people not to go and visit...a visit which might well inspire someone to really do something more about it, then that's not particularly helpful either.
I did it in the Dominicasn Republic in July on a trip. Brought lots of pencils, pens, rubbers, toothpaste and loads of other stuff for the children who lived up in the hills, it was really appreciated. I would rather give stuff to them personally at least that way I know they are getting the stuff.
