BBC2 Programme

I'm currently watching a very disturbing programme on Bulgaria's Abandoned Children. These children are institutionalised in rural homes and are either mentally or physically challenged.
The care is extremely poor and the conditions are dreadful. Some of the carers are excellent whilst others do not deserve the job they have got.
I ski in Bulgaria every year. So do you!

These children need our help. Money is not the only solution. If you are travelling this year please bring out some bed clothing, clothes etc (It will easily slip into you luggage.) Most of these children need visual and interactive stimulation with toys, books, crayons, basic educational toys etc.
They don't need to be new. You probably have box loads of them in garages, roofspaces or cupboards. Pack some away, talk to your ski instructor about arranging for them or someone they know to deliver them. We can make a difference. Write a letter to the Bulgarian Government or lobby your MEP. They are supposed to be part of the EU. IF THIS HAPPENED IN ANY DEVELOPED COUNTRY THERE WOULD BE AN OUTCRY. LET'S START TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. PLEDGE YOUR SUPPORT ON THIS SITE. The Ski Community can make a difference. THANKS

re: BBC2 Programme

Sorry but if you feel that strongly vote with your feet and stay away, if tourism stopped the government would take motice, If you think taking a few toys and clothes out will make a difference think again.
I dont watch programmes like this because it happens everywhere, there are major problems in this country we live here yet we dont care enough to help.

re: BBC2 Programme

Sadly, toys and other goodies will probably be intercepted by the staff anyway. But the Romanian orphan situation was addressed by the grass roots revulsion of western TV viewers so 'Disgusted, Tunbridge Wells' can make a difference. Google and you'll find some more data on what you can specifically do to assist these kids - there is a charity set up by the TV organisers.

I have been going to Bulgaria for the past 18 Years and have been looking after a couple of orphanages. I was in Shiroka Laka last week and the conditions in the bigger orphanage are not good. The main thing is the children are warm due to new windows being installed last year, but everything else is really bad. In my experience the best way to help is to bring money and spend it while you are there, take your ski instructor with you and find out what is needed. We have spent between 30 ...

We have spent between 30 and 40 thousand pounds on these children and every single penny can be accounted for. "Its nice to give a little back "

Pat you said

These children need our help. Money is not the only solution. If you are travelling this year please bring out some bed clothing, clothes etc (It will easily slip into you luggage.) I think first and foremost they needed food and urgent medical attention. Then the director needed to be shot.
