Back from Borovets

well just back from Borovets and I can say I have had an excellent time there for the most part, The skiing was great there and the instructors were excellent and of course the apres ski was excellent, made some good friends there which i hope to keep in touch with.
I can fully recomend trying the ski-doos they were a load of fun, and you must try a bit of bum boarding about eight of us (all drunk)went and bought some bum boards, about 4lev each board, and just jumped on them at the bottom ...

the condition of the slopes is starting to get very bad at the moment we had temps of 12C plus all week and the lower slopes suffering badly for it, though it was nice to be able to ski in just jeans and t-shirt. The slopes at the top of the gondola were in good condition but there was very little powder, and the gondola was shut for friday and saturday due to high wind.

Now the bad part I am very dissapointed about the hotel Iglika the food there was of a standard, in my opinion not fit for human consumption, my wife ended up being sick twice from the food. then there was our room which was small but livable, unfortunatly the maid on our floor thought that it was acceptable not to sweep the floor, not to take away dirty dishes, and to just pull the sheet back over the bed with out making it, then there was the fact that from our room we had a lovley view of the hotels bins, which fair enough they have to be stored somewhere, but the fact that the bins hadn't been emptied for a few weeks, I presume because the dust cart couldn't make it, but where the had just left the rubbish local wild life had scavanged it all and strewned rubbish all over the place, once again not the hotels fault but when it was removed by the dustman, on the monday, he hotel didn't clear up the rest of the rubbish by the end of the week. Oh and i almost forgot went for breakfast on monday morning and while we were gone my Oakley sunglasses (£225 worth) went missing out of our room and the hotel showed not interest what so ever

please don't pull my report to bits, despite these bad points I enjoyed my holiday very much and it has not put us off going back to Borovets, but i will be putting in a complaint to my tour operator and i will never go back to the Iglika again.

overall rating 7 out of 10

Sounds like you had a great time skiing, but holiday marred by a few events. I also had trouble with the food, but at the Olymp, however, had such a good time overall for a cheap price, have already booked for next year

re: Back from Borovets

the food isn't my main complaint, like you say we should have heeded advice about the food but when you just arrive after a long day in airports and a long bus journey, you are ready to eat just about any thing.
my main complaints are the lack of tidyness and the theft from our room, which once again we were warned about, but just forgot to pick up the glasses and were only gone for 10 to 15 min

re: Back from Borovets

It boils down in the main to the honesty of the cleaners ... we were a bit dumb after a night on the beers and left a wad of about 200 lev on the table in our room all day. The cleaners could have easily nabbed it but didn't ...

However, your hotel has a duty to take theft such as this very seriously. I think it's pretty poor that they didn't even attempt to do something about it. I would have been fuming.

ps - are you the couple from Hull?

re: Back from Borovets

Hi Guys, I too just got back from Borovets (sunday) and my report would image Rob and Sandra's. The food in The Rila hotel really was a disgrace and unfit for animal consumption lets alone humans.... Overall though the skiing was fantastic and we had an excellent time. Would go back again no problem but mot definitely eat out every meal!!!

re: Back from Borovets

hello, I was sat next to you on the plane back, hope I didn't bore you too much ... hope your 2 leg trip home back to Hull went ok too!

I couldn't work out why the staff in the hotels seemed so indifferent much of the time ... the Kalina hotel was pretty basic foodwise and accommodation-wise, but my memory of the place was the fact that the staff weren't interested in a bit of banter, and didn't seem to care about getting to know those who were prepared to stay and give the restaurant/bar ...

I met some great Bulgarian people over the course of the week so I know the attitude is not true of Bulgarians per se.

I'm not really complaining as I had a great time and this was only a small gripe, but I'm sure it will put some people off going back to Borovets (or Bulgaria) and that would be a shame.
