First time we flew with Balkan was 1991. They had red brocade curtains over all windows - a bit like the inside of a fortune tellers tent! In flight meal was one SERIOUSLY big tomato, a slice of (horse?) meat and a piece of something that was cross between bread and a dog biscuit! In flight entertainment was saying your prayers and avoiding water dripping from rusty bolts holding cabin together.
My first flight was 1994 and it was the only smoking flight I have ever been on! - You genuinely could not see 3 rows in front of you, and this was on a plane with an engine on the roof!!
To put it into perspective though, a return BA flight from Heathrow to Sofia will cost you over £1,OOO.
Plus on Balkan flights if you need more leg-room, you can just pick the seat up and move it back
