Ive been on Balkan Airways 3 times & Easyjet once & BA once to Sofia - I always now check the flight costs for all of these & Wizz air and if the rtn per person is less than £30 difference I'm going to be flying BA from now on.

That said 7th Nov week we have rtn flights for £40.... Easy Jet Friday morning & Sunday night - BA was a good £140 more.


Only had one issue with Balkan airways and we knew it was a connection flight. Midlands to Hull to Frankfurt to Burgas... ended up being Midlands to Hull to Frankfurt to Austria to Sofia to Burgas.... & they lost our luggage along the way (but we got our luggage to the accomodation within 24hrs - still had to buy toiletries & my shirt was stinking of sweat (imagine shirt & jeans in 35 degree heat... not nice.

Speaking to a source in BH AIR, it is certain that Balkan Holidays are not in difficulty. Flights have been moved to Sofia due to a) poor facilities at PDV b) It is operationally better to have the 2 airbus based in 1 airport and not 2. c) the main resort of Balkan is Bansko and the transfer is shorter from Sofia.

You should also not confuse BH AIR with the old Balkan Air and they are nothing to do with Bulgaria Air. Although sometimes they will lease an aircraft from each other to serve extra routes.

The reason tour operators cancel flights is down to poor forward sales. Its a catch 22 scenario. If people book book early & the flights fill up then the departure goes ahead. If people wait to see whats happening with snow conditions or cancellation of flights then these flights will inevitably be canceled. Balkan are not the only company to do this & with the economic climate the way it is this will happen a lot this winter. Rumors like are Balkan going bust will grow arms & legs. They have been around for 43years & will be around for at least another 43 probably a lot more. They are the leading operator to Bulgaria from the UK. Anyway Sofia is a much nicer airport to fly from than Plovdiv. If you decide to book everything individually you may get it cheaper but you won't have any security if any part of your holiday goes to the wall. Just remember XL & all the brits left stranded.
Anyway we need it to snow first before we start worrying about how we are going to get there!!!!!!
