Bansko would i go back

i have just returned from a week in Bansko and all the way through it i was torn as to whether or not i would go back.

I had read the reports of 3 hour queues etc for the gondola and had almost set myself up for a crap week of skiing. So here is my honest opinion of who should go to Bansko.

Young groups / couples on a tight Budget.

People who shouldnt go:

Expert skiiers or boarders (not enough for you to do)
People who dislike smoking. As a 20 a day smoker myself after 3 days i ...

Expert skiiers or boarders (not enough for you to do)
People who dislike smoking. As a 20 a day smoker myself after 3 days i couldnt go into any more restaurants or bars as it became unbearable.
People with young children. Safety is a major issue on the slopes plus you cant take them anywhere because of the smoke
People with any kind of toilet issues as the slopes toilets are like the ones out of trainspotting if they work
People who want good service.
People who like large open non crowded slopes.

To sum it up if you can afford to go to one of the more mainstream destinations dont bother with Bulgaria.

i definately wont be going back as much as i enjoyed the boarding the rest of the trip lefy yuo with a bad taste in your mouth.

Sorry you didn't have the best experience Gifford... we were there the week before you and had no problems at all... even the toilets were clean on the mountain!

The only issue we had with service was in 'the barrel' at the bottom of tomba... charged for 8 bread slices and only received 6 (waitress relented when she realised they other 2 were still by the grill) and there was a piece of grit in my bean soup ... yuk...

Other than that we had no problems at all, the staff were all ...

Other than that we had no problems at all, the staff were all friendly and we never really had an issue with smoke (none of our party smoked).

The slopes weren't too busy except for the usual bottle neck areas at the bottom of blue4 and the ski road... in fact, the days when the europa slalom was on we walked on to the gondola as usual at 8.40!!

Of course I understand that everyone has their own experience and opinion (and i don't have kids so haven't looked at it from the point of view regarding their safety) but i am genuinely sorry that you didn't have the best experience

Who in their right mind would remember and recount a bit of confusion over 2 slices of bread? 20 a day smoker who can't stand smoke? Either your insane or something isn't adding up here. Your comments on expert skiers not having enough to do though is fair enough.

Bit hasty on the 2 slices of bread malarky comment. I had a problem with chips last time i was there as the guy swore blind i hadn't paid for them.

re: Bansko would i go back

spot on. I smoke 20 a day and i couldnt put up with how smokey the pubs / clubs were.

How would a non smoker cope with it. As i say for the boarding i couldnt knock bansko for me it was great.

The only problem i had last season was the guy in the restaurant (to the right of the top gondala station) was trying to sell me tap water from plastic bottles! Mad otherwise a great holiday Very Happy

re: Bansko would i go back

Ok sorry i worded that wrong... we ordered 8 slices of bread (4of us with 4 bowls of soup 2 slices bread each), one of our group was my friend from sofia and the meal was ordered in Bulgarian so not a language barrier, we received 6 and realised about half way through the food when we went for our first slice and there were only 2 left... The waitress accused us of lying saying we must have already eaten the other 2 (in Bulgarian as she was walking away) but obviously my friend understood ...

The waitress accused us of lying saying we must have already eaten the other 2 (in Bulgarian as she was walking away) but obviously my friend understood perfectly... she then apologised to him in bulgarian when she came back realising the mistake was hers.

We wouldn't have been so bothered if the accusation had not been made... it's the principle... finding the gravel in the soup was the clencher... how does a lump of gravel get in to bean soup unless something has been on the floor! It wasn't just a small bit... We didn't eat at the barrel again.

We still had an awesome holiday but the gravel is what made that whole meal a somewhat 'memorable' experience

Very Happy
