Hi all I have done Pamps a number of times and fancy trying Austria this year as all in all it looks reasonable enough coming in below £1000 for half board and passes etc. What resort would you recommend for begginer to basic skiers. I looked at St Johann but a bit worried about the snow cover as it seems quite low altitude any help appreciated.
St Anton or Ischgl. Actually Ischgl has a quite difficult approach that might put beginners off, but St Anton is just perfect. It might be a bit more expensive but worth every penny.
Went to Mayrhofen a while ago - had a great week - tons of snow, no real queues and plenty of things to do, eat , drink etc. There are 2 main ski mountains (from what I can recall - Penken and Scheffau...with the Penken being by far the busiest) but with Scheffau offering some really good pistes! Also took a bus trip up to a place called Gelos - was much higher altitude - amazing snow, wide pistes but bitterly cold! Finally it is also possible to take a bus to the glacier (Hintertux) which ...

For quieter resort with great snow and ski in/ski out we liked Obergurgl/Hochgurgl whcih had some great off piste. For a cracking booze up with good boarding too I liked Mayrhofen (but it is a little built up and the queue forthe main ski area gondola can be a little annoying!)
Have been to st johan and it was good but very quite.
Tends to be one of the cheaper Austrian resorts along with Rauris only because they are lower and more limited.
Try Zell am see or Kaprun
Both really good resorts with more runs and better snow on average.

The resorts covered by the Kitzbuhler Alpenski pass, may be worth considering, there are over 1000km accesible on this lift pass and it also includes the Kaprun Glacier for guaranteed snow. Some of the resorts in this area are relatively low and inexpensive. With a car you could visit some excellent resorts. Google Kitzbuhler Alpen skipass. They have an excellent interactive website.
We just returned from Kitzbhuel having skiied the last 6 times in Borovets. There was no snow in resort but fantastic skiing up high - plenty of blues and challenging reds to keep everyone occupied, lift system very good even though we had to get a bus to the gondola. Rila does have the benefit of ski in-out (although it does help if there is snow!!) Would certainly recommend Kitzbhuel but havent been to any other Austria resorts so cant comment on them.
