I am going boarding for my first time in my life this Saturday. I havent't been able to before due to breaking my fibua, tibua and patella, complete tear of my ACL crucitate and 45% tear of my medial ligament back in July '04. I had my cruciate reconstructed in Sept '05 using part of my patella tendon. I have booked to go snowboarding as i was told that its easier on the knees than skiing? Has anyone got any advice? I have been doing shedloads of exercise.. squats, leg lifts, hamstring curls, running uphill and lots of running in general. I have a really good knee brace which i am going to bring. Im kinda planking it but would really appreciate any advice or if anyone has done this with a similar injury?
I'm a physio and all the exercises you have been doing sound great and do take your brace. i would check with your surgeon or physio for their opinion as they are the ones that know how stable your knee is.
I am going sking for the first time this year and am really bricking it as I see all the cruciate ruptures from sking and boarding every year!!! my son has finaly persuaded me to give it a go
Good luck!
Cheers Dawn, I have talked to the physio and they wont give me a proper answer.. the usual i wouldnt recommend it but your leg is fine. I cant see the surgeon/ specialist again as there is a 6 month waiting list and it would cost me 150 squids but he said the OP was a success the last time i saw him. Will give it a bash and take it easy anyhow.
It sounds like you've done everything right Begbie, but as you'll know the only real way to test an old injury is to test it! The only other advice I could offer is to relax, because you will undoubtedly fall over at some point. If you relax, bend your knees and go with the board you will be fine. The worst thing that usually hapens is a bruised bum, and whilst tears and brakes do happen, they are not common and it's usually because people haven't had proper tuition and decide to go it alone ...

Take care and have fun!
Heading to Borovets on the 3rd Dawn, thanks anyhow! Cheers Davros.. not too worried about the upper body, have wrist guards and plenty of natural padding
I think the knee is covered enough with the brace.. its a good one that has plastic joints down the side and the other knee is the finest.. probbaly better than it ever was due to the amount of exercise its been getting lately!!
