re:Boring old Helmets

It just highlights how accidents can happen to even the best skiers , you can be sure schooey would have had the best equipment , used to speed , local knowledge i cant imagine there would be anyone on the slopes better equipped to avoid having an accident but the poor fella hit a hidden rock and it's almost game over . I'm a slow moving novice but i'll be wearing one definitely .
get well soon schooey

Got to agree, my mates have took the p out of me for the last few years for wearing a helmet, but a guy we were skiing with last year told us about a fall he had two days earlier which had split and cracked his helmet and he was adamant that if he had not been wearing the helmet he may not have been so lucky to only be concussed and having to buy a new helmet.

Hi John, that was Paul who is a friend of ours, we saw his helmet and it was split in two from the back of his neck up to the top. He would have had a nasty headache if not worse if he had not been wearing it. You do see a lot more people wearing helmets theses days, including me, and apart from being safer they are a lot warmer when it is very cold. You will see Paul in March as he is staying the same week that you will be with us.

re:Boring old Helmets

I have a huge head! Recently I went into Snow and Rock. I explained my predicament to the sales girl who assured me that they would have a helmet that fitted. I tried every brand of helmet that morning and not one fitted. I tried all sizes and designs. The entire staff tried to help me out but after a couple of hours they gave up!

The problem is that I am wide at the temples so if it fitted there then it would be too long front to back. If it fits front to back then it is too tight sided to side which causes instant head aches.

I the went to two seasons and found the same issues there. I do have one of the new uvex plus 1 helmets now but you have guessed it within a minute or two of wearing it my head is banging.

I wear motorcycle helmets for no more than an hour and a helmet on my pushbike which don't seem to give me the same problems and agree that helmets really are a must but really struggle to find a ski helmet. I even struggle with sunglasses and have to wear Julbos as these are the only ones that will fit my massive dome.

Any Ideas? I will continue my quest but do not hold out much hope!

re:Boring old Helmets

I got to agree with you all. i hate helmets but wore one for the first time last year.the conditions were not good and i ended up taking a tumble on marky 2.Hit a slab of ice face first.all i got was a bloody nose, grazed face and a very bruised pride. With the helmet I managed to ski back down.without the helmet god only knows. As i said last season ,i would defend any ones right not to wear one but i think we all know we should. steve.g

re:Boring old Helmets

Despite getting too hot in a lid I wear one and my kids can't come unless they wear one, simple. I never used to wear one but was advised by my seriously good Bulgarian ski instructor to get one. He had been taken out by somebody towards the end of the previous season. The point is it may not be your fault and no matter how good a skier you are an accident may be unavoidable. Remember Liam Neesons' wife, she wasn't even moving

And don't forget those dozy skiers who turn around whilst walking with skis on their shoulders - i wear mine until I'm safely back in the hotel, just in case!

Most accidents i've seen have been someone else's fault, doesn't matter how good you are....

Hopefully nobody will need one but better safe than sorry. I drive with my seat belt on and board with my helmet on! Very Happy

re:Boring old Helmets

Yes good point Glenn, all skiers need to wear their helmets whilst leaving a chairlift just in case the boarder next to you finds it difficult to run with a plank of wood attached to one of their feet and feels it necessary to use you as some kind of support

re:Boring old Helmets

Some good points made. I stand by not making them compulsary but if the insurance companies insist there should be a higher premium for those who dont. Lots of people mention 'being taken out' as a concern, maybe some kind of proof of competency before you are unleashed would improve safety more?
