Boro 7th Jan - UPDATE

Morning All,

No new snow last night, although temps are quite cold today.

Gondola is open but only to ski down to the Yastrebets side (Markudjik slopes are all closed including nursery). Snow on Yastrebets 2 and 3 is apparently great (some lift operators skied it earlier) but again this is only 3rd party so don't shoot me if I am wrong!! Skiing down from Gondola to Yastrebets is not great, but better than yesterday as they have had the piste-bashers up there last night and this ...

Rila side - 4 man chair is shut today (as all snow melted). 2 x drags are open but the drag next to Yanakiev is closed. Sitnyakovo Express is open but only for walkers.
No snow reported for today as of yet.
Snow Cannons are not currently on either on Rila or yastrebets side. Once other half actually gets up the gondola can give you his opinion of the snow up there, but for the moment, this is all I have for you.. Get doing snow dances or it really will be a Wii competition in one of the bars!!

re: Boro 7th Jan - UPDATE

Forgot to say...the 2 x drags on rila are said to be in very poor condition and they expect them to be very busy as it will be the only place for beginners to ski again.... It is also warmer there and the sun is burning through so they expect it get worse and slushy... trying to put a positive spin on that, but not sure how...!!!!!!!!

Kaz

you are the best. We are coming on 16th. Is there an option for us to travel daily to Bansko for our skiing, either bus or car hire. It does seem better over there and at least some skiing available. I write this freezing cold in a very snowy Edinburgh. How ironic is that ?

Hi ya,

Some of the schools were putting on free buses, but now they are charging daily to take you over, which will become really expensive, It's also a 2 1/2hour journey, so you tend to start at 12.30 (to get a half-day pass) and then leave at 5pm. if you plan on doing it every day and there are a number of you it is cheaper to hire a car and do the journey yourselves, but obviously that's a lot of hassle. I don't really know what's best and as always, whilst i can report on the 'real' situation, don't want to give the wrong advice to you as i seriously am no expert just good at passing on info!!!! I also don't know what the conditions in bansko are like and whether or not it is worth it. When other half went over there last week, he said it was packed. Steve C (regular poster) should be on here at some point and will be able to update you on conditions as well as giving you an honest idea of whether or not it's worth it. Also, some of the people that did the trip last week / this week, may be able to help as well. Sorry if that's not much help....!! Smile

Kas, once again great report and more importantly a true account. I should of been flying out today to Borovetz, but with bad weather here(England) and poor conditions out there so pleased I took the time to read the discussion board.

re: Boro 7th Jan - UPDATED UPDATE!!

Hi All,

Unfortunately, conditions are even worse now. At the top of the gondola it's very cold and windy... A few classes are skiing down to the yastrebets runs, but most 'sensible' classes(!) are going back down via the gondola as the run looks just too dangerous to ski. There is a small bit of coverage, but mainly grass and rocks.. instructors who have skied for years don't even want to tackle it, so that's saying something!! yastrebets 2 and 3 however is still good skiing - but the ...

There is a small bit of coverage, but mainly grass and rocks.. instructors who have skied for years don't even want to tackle it, so that's saying something!! yastrebets 2 and 3 however is still good skiing - but the only 'safe' way you can get to it is by going to the 4 man chair direct, not skiing down from the top... BUT Borosport are still offering free return transfers up there (you get on outside gondola, they take you to the 4-man chair and then you catch them back down from the 4man chair.) They are working on a shuttle basis, so you may need to wait 5 or 10mins but not too long. If you haven't pre-ordered lift passes, honest recommendation is to wait till arrival and then unless anything improves, you can not buy a full one and buy the Yastrebets one (25lev) a day or nothing at all....

Sorry guys, i hate writing this stuff.... Sad

Kas

Great reports, we're out on the 16th, if the airports and roads over here in the UK manage to get back to normal. At the moment we have heavy snow forecast for over the weekend on the South Coast!!!

Still looking forward to coming over, will be a shame if we can't ski but there are still lots of friends to catch up with.

Might get the ski's out this evening and take them over the park, just for a practice.

I know - so sorry and I actually sit here feeling sick to the stomach when I get the call and then write them - feel absolutely gutted for everyone but if the instructors / locals etc could make snow they would...people that say the bar owners are relishing it are just way off-track it's affecting everyone!! Luckily I'm out of it at home!! I will say though that in general the tourists have been brilliant. there are a few blaming their instructors etc for no snow and getting really a*sy, but ...

Luckily I'm out of it at home!! I will say though that in general the tourists have been brilliant. there are a few blaming their instructors etc for no snow and getting really a*sy, but in general everyone's just turning it into a different type of holiday, doing a bit more sight-seeing, coming into samokov for cheap meals etc. Again, not ideal but on the whole, apart from a few idiots and without sounding patronising, the British have been pretty good, positive and general all-round sports about it!!
