re: Borovets today

Webcams don't give you the real picture - anything more than 1cm looks like 'great snow', plus its so cold that the trees are frosted which makes it look like there has been a large dump. There might have been 80cms of snowfall on yastrebets but this is basically no more than 10 cms of compacted snow/ice in the deepest places and almost nothing at the thinnest. On the top, there are plenty of rocks etc coming through. So in essence, it may look good and they might say there is a ...

Remember who sets up webcams and where their interests lie.....

Ive been to Borovets lots of times, Its a fantastic place with loads of fun things going on. The guys do a great job to try and make the slopes as useable as possible, you cant help the weather but you wont regret going there its just a great place to be.

As someone who has just returned from Borovets yesterday, and actually been to all the various areas except Yastrebets I can tell you that there is Definitely a shortage of Snow, especially at the top areas. I think the main issue is that the Snow cover which was there was lost during a violent storm over Christmas. Whilst there has certainly been snow since, it is just Not enough. 2 of the Yastrebets Red runs are Open, Yastrebets 3 and Popangelov plus Martinovi Baraki. The Markudjik area is Closed, except for the Green drag area of Suhar. The Sitnnyakova Ski Way (Green) is declared open, but there is not much snow in places, making it dangerous in places, since as it is not a Slope as such it is not prepared, so gets cut up and icey. I had a fall on the last day on a Pathway type run between the Sitnayakova blue, which isnt bad and the Sitny' 3 red. The red is OK, but was getting icey on friday the 22nd. The Musala footpath is Not declared Open. The bottom end, under the Gondola, is very broken up. So basicly IF you can ski happily on Reds, you have 3 to choose from, But lower Intermediate skiing Green/Blue is Limited. The bottom end Nursery slopes are being topped up by Snow cannons as long as the Temp is low enough. This was my 4th visit to Borovets. It LOOKS like there is a LOT more snow, the trees are very white, but it is lacking a depth of base snow thickness, which is Most apparent on Pathway typ runs like Musala and Sitnayakovo ski way.

I can tell ALL readers that you can certainly Trust the updates from Kas. She has no axe to grind. She is simply telling it as it is.
The Borosport people who run the Lifts are Not exactly very Proactive in helping the situation. The Rotata (Green Drag) eventually opened about Wednesday last week, then broke down after One hour, and was out for the rest of the day. The RILA Drag broke down on Wednesday, a motor burnt out. This was reported by local Restaurant people as going to be out for a week !!!
This is simply NOT acceptable, since it makes the lower slopes, which are usually fairly busy anyway from Sunday to Tuesday Unbearable in terms of queing.
As I said this was my 4th visit, I'm sad to say I think it will be my last, since there is Not enough Money spent on keeping things going. So I will be looking elsewhere for a better prepared resort.

re: Borovets today

Have been reading Kas' posts with interest. I was in Boro at christmas and despite being OK snow the week before, warm winds destroyed the snow in the week we were there, especially up the top. This has destroyed the 'base' so not surprised everything is a bit cut up. Real shame and I was told that this happened about 20 years ago. Am still looking at getting out again this season so please Kas, keep iup the excellent posts. Just one question - whats the story with the pink straws?

re: Borovets today

Just got back from a week out there. Can basically confirm what has been said above. I mainly skied Yasberets side where the snow was good (mainly snow cannon with a little topping of 'normal') although lack of runs could of been an issue I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Kas sorry i didnt get into the Titanic to see you......couldnt see a lot most nights........Booze Booze Booze

You can trust what she says it is very accurate and was invaluble to me. Smile
