Going to Bulgaria early september for 20 days. Planning a trip with a rented car from Sofia to Pleven, Shumen, Varna Plovdiv...all the places in beteween. Before returning to Sofia we (husband and me) 4-5 day at Bansko or in the vicinity. Any tipes, suggestions, expreience with driving, hotels, interesting places, please send to me.

The road signs are completely unreadable if you don't, and be VERY aware that the insurance cover over there can be very iffy.

You make driving in Bulgaria sound like a nightmare Pete!!! It really isnt that bad. I think interesting is more the term to describe it! Most people say that women are the worlds worst drivers, believe me after driving in Bulgaria for the last 18 months I can assure you that statement is far from true, most of the worlds worst live here! Signposting is getting better and more often than not signs are put in Bulgarian and English on major routes.

Wow, thanks for the information. I am not afraid driving there, and I can speak Bulgarain, but do not read&write. What I heard is about gangs on the road and the ability to park and walk far from the car in places like the Yagodina cave.
My husband and I always travel like that: rent a car and go on our own. Last year we were in Turkey - Kapadokia to Konya, and was simply great. One difference, though, is that sign post are in Latin letters....
All said and done Pamporovo should be fantastice at that time of the year. Loads of mountain air, hire a mountain bike for added fun. Wow sounds like you are going to have a great adventure hope you enjoy it
