Top news: 26 September 2006, Tuesday.

The European Commission has invited Bulgaria and Romania to join the European Union next year, as they are able to take on rights as full fledged members on 1 January 2007.

Talking to MEPs on Tuesday, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso marked the end of "the historic fifth enlargement of the European Union" with the accession of Bulgaria and Romania.

The readiness of Bulgaria and Romania is a direct result from their efforts to meet the requirements for membership, Barroso said in plenary in Strasbourg. He thanked the peoples and authorities of both countries for the efforts they made to be part of the process of enlargement.

Yet, he reminded that as guardians of the EU Treaties, the monitoring reports on Sofia and Bucharest are a result of "rigorous, fair and objective assessment".

Barroso said that until accession and beyond that the European Commission will apply a mechanism of cooperation and monitoring on the continuous progress achieved by both states, particularly in areas of judiciary reform, fight against corruption and organised crime.

Both Sofia and Bucharest will report regularly on the progress they make to the European Parliament and the Council of the EU.

re: Bulgaria to join EU January 1st 2007

Okay.

So the next question is:

My partner and I are looking at going to Pamps for a week in January time.

Does this mean it'll now have the prices ramped up for the general holiday package, and for the food and drink as well?

The above are two very good reasons why we go to Bulgaria and if they stick the prices up, I think I'd rather go to somewhere like Avoriaz in that case.

Your opinions / thoughts?

James.

re: Bulgaria to join EU January 1st 2007

Shouldnt do.

I personally think that Bulgaria has priced itself out of the market now. Things arent that much cheaper now but in general the quality of product is alot poorer than you would get in France etc.

We are off to France this Xmas and the package we have assembled ourselves is actually the same price as going to Boro last xmas, but the skiing will be far better Razz

re: Bulgaria to join EU January 1st 2007

the skiing holiday and ski packs lift packs ect.. arnt much cheaper than most of the european resorts, I have prices up hol to kitzbul and one to bansko and kitzbul came out cheaper. The difference is when you are there food and drink in Bulgaria is much cheaper than other european resorts. They may hick the prices up if they take on the Euro but that will be a while yet. They might have to improve there infrastructure as well to meet EU regulations and again this could make prices higher ...

Enjoy it while you can.

re: Bulgaria to join EU January 1st 2007

Holiday prices are fixed as per your brochure and will not increase.

Blimey.

Do you really think that EVERYTHING is going up in price in Bulgaria on 1st Jan 07?

If they really wanted to capitalise on what they have got then they would have done that long ago.

Talks have begun of budget airlines charging £10 for a one way flight to Bulgaria in the near future.

This is a VERY positive move for a country that deserves a better future, and if in the long run that means paying more ...

This is a VERY positive move for a country that deserves a better future, and if in the long run that means paying more for some things, then I for one will be glad to pay it - after all I have fond memories of fantastic holidays for many many years that cost me comparitively very little, and if people missed out on that, then that is not the Bulgarians fault is it?

So many people (not all) treat Bulgaria as a cheap investment place to make money, and have little or no concern about the growth and development of the country or the future of it's citizens.

If Bulgaria is every bit as good as Spain (which it is in my book) then why should it be cheaper?

Please commence the rant Razz

re: Bulgaria to join EU January 1st 2007

a little point, there are some 8million Bulgarians, there are for example some 2-3000 tourists per week in Borovets for the ski season, what makes you think prices are going to shoot up ? how the hell will the people who's country it actually is be able to buy anything, get real.

People that complain about the higher prices in BG do so because they dont actually know the place and dont know where you can go to get things a lot cheaper! Wink

re: Bulgaria to join EU January 1st 2007

IMO people dont mind the average skiing and poor infrastructure if you are paying peanuts. However its not the case anymore.
Fraser, your idea is fine if you live there and know these places. Im not prepared to spend most of my holiday looking for a bar where I can save 50p a pint.
