re: Bulgaria v Italy

skibhoy,

you're right, you do get what you pay for. Bardonecchia has more pistes which are better maintained but you will regret going self catering.

I stayed in the Campo Smith apartments when i went in 2007 and the apartment facilities were very limited, one two ring hob to be precise, no microwave, grill or oven. We were in an apartment for three which consisted of one proper bed, a sofa bed and a camping bed, two of which were expected to be used in the living room.

The nearest place to buy food to you is a (not so) local minimart/convinience atore which was a good half an hour stroll down the hill (A killer coming back with loads of shopping) And you will need to buy food, unless you want to eat at the resort's one and only restaurant, where the only food on offer is pizza (if you can call it that, the topping was liquidy and drained off when you picked up a slice)

That said though, the resort's one bar is fairly reasonablie, it is right next to your hotel (a 20m walk across the bottom piste) good atmosphere in there too (as everyone in the whole resort uses it!)

All in all, if your going for the skiing part, its very good, much better than Bulgaria in my opinion. But just dont expect much to do at night as it is VERY limited!!

It is what you make of it though, enjoy!

Hope this helps!

You could try La Thuile, loads of pistes or Courmayeur, which I thought was better suited to intermediates than beginners but good standards at reasonable prices
