re: Bulgarian

good on ya Dave! I found a great course on Amazon for about £15 - book and CD called 'Teach yourself Bulgarian'. I spent about 6 weeks on it, and could communicate reasonably well by the time I went. Mind you, shame I didn't learn the dislocated knee one, since that's exactly what I did, and the Doctor in pamps didn't speak a word of English. (But %$*^*%^& it hurts! translates well in most languages I think.....lol). I have to say that all the Bulgarians really appreciate it if you try ...

I have to say that all the Bulgarians really appreciate it if you try to speak the language - as one waiter said to me "it shows that you're not just an ordinary tourist, you're respecting our country". Also, you're far more likely to get fair prices (and fair change) if you are heard adding it up in Bulgarian...........
Go for it - it's great fun, and you'll impress your mates no end.....

re: Bulgarian

"How does the masculine
feminine thing work? "
masculine-byal(white)
feminine-byala
In most cases just add "A"
For example masculine "lud"(crazy) becomes
"luda"-feminine.
Likewise losh-losha(good); dobur-dobra(good)
Same rule applies to Spanish, Italian, Romanian...Russian...Polish...
Most nouns ending in "A" are feminine, and those ending in consonant are masculine, while ending "O"or "E" usually mean Neutral gender(dete-child;kote-kitten;nishto-nothing;yastie-meal)
So you have ...

So you have 3 genders:
F)rusa jena -blonde woman
M)rus muj-blonde man
N)ruso dete-blonde child
Hope this helps. Your turn now. Very Happy
