Buying ski equipment

D Hi hope everyone is enoying this glorious summer!!, we did enjoy our visit to Bansko and Greece over the period of the jazz festival and now were looking to the winter season when we are planning to visit again. Could anyone help us with a source of information about ski equipment as we might invest in some this season, however we know little about the specifications, quality, value for money etc, having trustingly hired our equipment each year and gone with the flow. Could anyone help us with a source of information about ski equipment as we might invest in some this season, however we know little about the specifications, quality, value for money etc, having trustingly hired our equipment each year and gone with the flow. A general overview about skis, boots and bindings would help, with some suggested brands, suppliers, we are very much recreatonal beginners/intermediae skiers, not likely to progress much further!! so wouldn't go for a massive investment. Any info would be helpful, with thanks Very Happy

re: Buying ski equipment

Then I would only consider buying boots and getting them customised, just hire your other stuff - you get the latest equipment, don't have to make a substantial investment, can vary it depending on conditions and don't have to lug it over with you. The brand of boot will depend to some degree on your foot shape and what you want to ski - go to a proper store with an experienced boot fitter and spend a day trying a range.

re: Buying ski equipment

In BG this is true. In fact its a bloody disgrace what the package tour people get offered - not so much in Bansko because they bought new equipment 3 years ago but in Borovets they're renting 20 year old planks of 2 by 4. The quality in European resorts is substantially higher with 'standard' kit being less than 2 seasons old.

re: Buying ski equipment

They are learning here, Bansko Sport have brand new skis, and options to upgrade (im not on commission Wink) but some of the other hires are hit and miss, especially the smaller shops. If you are not satisfied, say so !!!, your the customer... Also make sure the skis are waxed and edged, the shop will oblige normally and should not charge... Cannot really comment on Boro, though im sure i saw the pair of skis i rented back in 1983, they were supporting the roof in `Chilli Peppers' (2m10cm ...

I have been offered rubbish in the Alps as well though, they tried to fob me off with an old pair of Olin's in Morzine, errrr, no thanks. Razz

re: Buying ski equipment

Worth looking around at the end of the season for skis, I got a good deal a couple of years ago £400 pair of skis for £210 three or four trips and they haver paid for themselves. Plus allowed me to ski in cumbria for two weekends this year as well. The sooner you buy the sooner you save on rental ski. Plus you know what you have got, when they were last waxed and edged and how old they are.

re: Buying ski equipment

Buy a good pair of skis in the region of 300 to 400 and use them over the next 10 years plus like I have.
I bought some titanium Volant skis carvers that are fabulous they dont scratch on the top (very easily) they dont rust.
great skis and they have paid for them selves twice over.
I may be looking at buying some more soon as carvers have moved on but they are still very good skis with years left in them.
