I'm from Holland and here it works likes this;
Every year they test ski's, in all diciplines; slalom, downhill racing, super G etc. Your category would be carve ski "allround ". Look for the tests 2008/2009 and pick one of the TOP tested ski's. Coming season they will be maybey 50% cheaper. They will last ( with 1 or 2 weeks skiing ) at least 4 years ( wax and edge them every year ). This will be cheaper than renting ski's and you will have top quality.

When you ski 1 or 2 weeks a year and fly to BG ( mayby pay for extra lugage) it's better to hire your ski's (be sure to rent new skis') . Buy your own shoes ! ( I don't want to put my feet where your's were yesterday !!

I would like to second what steve says about bansko sports, they will change things every day until you are happy, I have my own skis and boots here, but i take any friends without gear there !!
