I think it was me who made the comment about £1000 what i was getting at is that for the type of holiday i have in bulgaria i wouldn't be able to do it in a top french resort such as val d'sere, tignes etc because it would be too expensive...
with my skiing skills i would want an instructor with me as i am only an intermediate skier i can ski all the runs in borovets but still like to have an expert with me to show me where i can improve. i don't stay half board i like to eat out and i ...

if my holiday costs me around £1000 in bulgaria and i book everything on the net easyjet flights, private apartment rental etc i find it hard to believe i can do it for less in tignes!!!
I think you could do a holiday there for well under £1000 but its packed lunch on the slopes and half board chalets and penny pinching walking to a bar in the middle of nowhere to get a pint for under a fiver!
I will go there in a year or two when i get bored of borovets and need more challenging pistes but going on pete's price list i will be planning on spending a lot more than a grand for the week i know that much!
I am with Boon on this, why ski in a massive resort if your hardly going to get off the nursery slopes. The instruction in bulgaria is fantastic for the price, a family of four learn to ski 4 hours a day tuition is just over £500, in France you would be looking at just over £1500 for 2 hours a day, to me it makes no sence to learn anywhere else. Once you no longer need lessons and if you own your own skis, the price is comparible.
We learnt in Boro and I can 100% agree with those of you who have commented on larger ski areas being wasted on beginners.
We will always enjoy Boro, but now like to explore other resorts too for the variety of runs.
We're off to Les Deux Alpes for the second year in a row in March. Yes, the lift passes are higher (£175 with Neilson), but we skiied a fraction of the resort last year so are looking forward to going back and trying more new runs. On the other hand, there's something ...

On the other hand, there's something about revisiting the same runs over the course of a week to see how you improve!!
Pint of lager - 5 euro
Giraffe (!) of wine in restaurants - anywhere between 6 to 10 euro
Pizza/Pasta - in the region of 12 euro
I know they're not BG prices, far from it, but on our side this year is the fact we are in a catered chalet, so it's a spot of lunch and a few drinks a day, too tired for partying late into the night!!
We thought long and hard about where to go this year, and I would have loved to have made Boro my first choice, but only getting one ski holiday tis year, I wanted to be as sure as you can be of getting decent snow. This is where Boro has had a tough time the last couple of years, and I'm sorry, but it was a risk I didn't want to take. Nowhere is snow sure, far from it, but a higher altitude glacier resort has that headstart on lower resorts.
However, you make what you will from a holiday, and I'm sure those of you heading for BG again this year will still have a great time - I'd rather be making the most of every minute on the slopes personally.
Just back from Chamonix, Craig are we talking about the same place!!!!!!!!
Been to Boro maybe 6 times as well as Italy and Val.
Skiing was good, but they've had very little snow since xmas, spring conditions, rained at the top of the mountain on our first night. Then did freeze over night but 12 degrees top of the mountain during the day. Some slopes were getting patchy others very icy.......they need snow soon.
Eating and drinking out in resort or on the mountain is expensive. ...

Ok so it was just me and the hubby. Evening meal, 2 gin and tonics, 2 starters, 2 mains and average bottle of wine....... averaged about 105 euros. Pints about 5 euros. Pizza on mountain 15 euro.
The family went to Boro self catering, average spend max £100 a day, 4 of us breakfast, lunch and nice meal out.
The amount of skiing in Chamonix is amazing and uncompilable to Bulgaria and you could make your own lunch and picnic on the mountain as well as i'm sure find cheap restaurants out of the centre of resort if you wanted to do it cheaper.
But for me the food and drink in the majority of resaurants in Boro has always been lovely, and cheap. Ok so you dont have the choice of slopes but if you're learning or just going for a short break you cant beat it, especially for the atmosphere and friendly people you will meet. My kids love the place!
Forgot to say, booked Easyjet flights to Geneva, then Chambus transfer, about £130 each. This is about the same price as i paid for flights and transfers to Boro.
In Chamonix we stayed in a basic, but central hotel, £100 a night. In Boro, 4* hotel, central hotel, ski in/out, pool and spa.....95 euros a night for double room!
I like Borovets very much good atmosphere and good runs. Been 3 times. The night life is affordable and quite buzzy.
Went to Italy (Presolana) off the beaten track you could say slopes were excellent both in Monte Pora and Paseo Presolana. Prices were half Boro costs but zero apres ski great local restaurants and bella Italia. But if we had to go there as beginners it would have been difficult. I liked it but hand on heart will say it would not suit 98% of the British skiers I have ...

Boro or BG in general is fantastic for beginners intermediates and mixed family groups. I intend to go next year again (2012) It is relaxed informal and with the Sky Sports in bars familiar. It will never compete with the Alps in terms of the variety of skiing opportunities. But I ask this question is it trying to compete with that offer.
I dont think bulgaria should be compared with the top alps resorts... ive only been to boro once so i am no expert but its a no frills affordable place to ski... the snow can obviously be risky as can most places but its seems to have had a hard time the last year or so in january!
think some people give bulgaria a hard time on this forum and there entitled to there opinion but its a shame to potentially put people off the place with harsh reviews recommending top resorts when there not ...

for beginners and intermediates you cant fault the place for what you pay!!!
i will be there the 25th hoping for a big dump this weekend...
