I think you're a bit harsh on Cairngorm. I don't think anybody would say it's a consistently brilliant resort, but on its day it is very good. New year is always going to be a gamble in Scotland, even more so than BG, and you can't really be surprised that it was busy.
I think that if you can go at short notice then it's definitely worth a visit when conditions are good, and if you live close enough to make driving up there for a weekend an option then it's hard to beat for convenience. ...

However - you're absolutely right about value for money. Not saying Cairngorm is overpriced - you just can't expect prices in the UK to compete with BG.
I've been looking for alternatives to Bulgaria for a couple of years (I love Bulgaria mind, just like variety as well!) and everywhere I look at falls woefully short in terms of value. Off to Romania for a weekend later this year, but even that has worked out more expensive than Bansko, and there isn't as much skiing.
Loads of people come on here and pretend that you can do trips to the alps for similar prices but it's simply not true. Yes, you can have a cheap week in the Alps. But not if you want to stay in a 4* complex with a pool, eat out every night and not worry about taking a packed lunch up the mountain, and enjoy the apres ski as well. I reckon Bg generally works out at about 1/2 the price of a cheap(ish) holiday to France.
Mattsville,
Try looking at Livigno (Italy), not as cheap as BG, but probably the best value in the Alps, high so almost snow sure and duty free that keeps the costs down.
We too love BG, but fancied a change a few years ago and now love it as well.
By the way PP went there end of last season and enjoyed it.
I mentioned that once before, Bulgaria is a bargain compared to a week in Scotland, but as I'm just under 2 hours away from the nearest resort, Glencoe, you can't knock it for day trips or an overnight ... just check the lift and snow reports before you go.
I wouldnt knock Cairngorm, or any other Scottish ski area in general. As has been said, when conditions are great, they really are that!
I was just comparing the price of ski hire, lift passes, never mind instruction should one need it!
But as for expecting it to be busy at new year- yeah expected that too, as i used to live in Aviemore!

Was not knocking Cairngorm, or any of the Scottish ski areas as when conditions are good, they can be excellent- indeed over the years on here i have promoted trips there!
I was making comparisons to ski hire, lift passes and insruction costs compared to Bulgaria.
Indeed i wasnt supprised it was busy, spent many New Years there, as i used to live in Aviemore!
Blimey Ian, you got the shakes ??? hehehehe
I have to admit to only having skied in Scotland once, a bloody long way from the Westcountry (we flew)... Standing on the edge of the `White Lady' in -10 degrees whilst doing a BASI assessment was possibly the coldest and most miserable i have ever been on a mountain... i was warmer at the top of the Kitzsteinhorn in Austria when it was -25... Hardy lot the Scots though, i loved the lift attendant in shirtsleeves, shoveling ice at the head of the ...

I guess you were unlucky with the ski conditions; when Scotland is fully independent and in control of its oil revenue Im sure they will invest in their ski centres and the food will at least improve!. With Donald Trump putting hundreds of millions into the north east of scotland Im very sure others will follow and in a few years (snow dependent) will be alot better.
