I do think its wise to buy kids their own ski's. I bought my eldest her first pair for £65 second hand on ebay. They did her 2 seasons of lessons on dry slopes (saving £15 per term for having her own equipment) and 3 ski holidays. I spent a bit getting them serviced before each snow excursion but they recovered well.
They are now being used by her younger brother and there's one more child to pass them down to.

When we travel, we get 1 pair of adult and 1 pair of childrens ski's in one ski bag so take 4 pairs for the price of 2 carriage. Plus manage to pack ALL sallopettes and jackets in with the ski's too leaving suitcases just for helmets and clothes.
Not sure about adult ski's - I love having my own and would prefer to ski on my own but the last couple of holidays, I've carted them over and ended up hiring ski's as the snow was a bit iffy and I didn't want to wreck them.
We bought snowboards (and boots etc) for the first time this year after five years of renting them at various resorts and see three big advantages:
Most important advantage for me was getting properly fitted boots - I suffer badly from heel lift, although I didn't realise it until getting a pair of boots properly fitted.
Consistency: it handles the same, there's no lottery about whether the bindings or anything else working properly,I know when it needs waxing or edging and it costs ...

With the snowfall in the UK this year it's easy to sling the board in the car and get a day at Yad Moss, Raise (Cumbria) or a weekend in Scotland. This year I will have had at least 14 days of boarding in the UK, verses 12 abroad (inc a week in Bansko ).
I bought an ex demo snowboard off ebay, so I'm not really bothered if it gets damaged by rocks etc - will just chuck it away and get another when it's buggered!
The sooner you buy them the sooner you save. All of the above you know the skis and the standard plus you can pick the ones that are for just on pieste or off or combo or freestyle choice is yours. i think the best thing is not having to que for fitting on the first day.
downside you have to pay for all servicing and any repairs to then and ski carriage which seems to be increasing!!!
We all have our own skis. If you look around at the end of the season you can get some really good ...

If you look around at the end of the season you can get some really good bargins my skis should have been £500 payed £210, hubbys should have been $1,000 he got them for $400 (they were bought in the states), got my daughter for around £130 off of ebay. all excellent makes down side is you buy them at the begining of summer and have to wait about 6 months to use them!!!
