We got some Levs at Gatwick at 2.5 to the pound. We went to Pamporova - The rate there is 2.6. Very easy to change sterling notes, cards are not taken in many places. Quite a few ATMs around.
It is not worth taking levs into the country. The exchange rate is not as good. Just take new sterling no rips or writing on and change at the reception in your hotel. Do not change at Sofia/ plovdiv airport or let any of the hotel staff change it on the side for you!(you might get ripped off) Why take Dollars all that extra hassle is not needed. Once and for all let us try and put this topic to bed JUST TAKE STERLING and change it over there! ( Sorry if I sound a bit fed up but this one ...

I was not asking what to take as thanks to Pamps Petes essential guide and the fantastic advice from all poster I was aware that the way forward was Sterling....
