Do you need to wax a new board?

Hi I have my own board for the first time this year it's new, can anyone advise me about waxing. Will it be ok as it is, should I take a block of wax, or should I get it hot waxed, and if the best is hot wax, should I get it done before I go or when I am in resort? I am going to Bansko, never been there before so if hot waxing in resort is the best option where do I go? Very long boring question i knowb but any help woild be much appreciated.

just make sure your edges are sharp on the mid-quarters of your board..a new board shouldnt need waxing, unless youre wanting to shave seconds off your slalom times that is, and you probably wouldnt notice the difference anyway...theres a load of different waxes out there for different kinds of snow and temps...you can just use a bog standard white candle stick..rub this on the base of ya board every morning before hitting the snow.

Thankyou, I know not to bother now, not that good yet so don't want to go any faster than I did on an old hired board. Cool

Personally i would wax it, its quite easy, you can find instructions on the internet. a new board will not come waxed, its just the plastic base. if you have a an old iron i would use that cos the wax will get in the steam vents of a new one and you will knack it. all you have to do is melt the wax on bye dripping it using the iron. you then spread it using the iron to cover all of the base and edges. then scrape it off with a hard plastic scraper, dont use a metal one. an ice scraper for ...

Make sure you get back to the plastic base after scraping. its not the wax on your board that makes it slippy. the wax actually goes into the base of your board, into sort of pores like in your skin( dont know a better way of describing it) so ensure it is all gone. If conditions are icy you can take the wax off your board in a day or two. i usually get my board waxed half way theough the week when i'm on holiday. you can get wax to suit all temperatures. you wont need the type for specific temps unless your seriouse about speed. Wax definitly makes a difference. Dont know how well using a cold wax like a candle works, i doubt it works as well as hot waxing but i reckon i'll give it a try myself. Waxing with an iron is exactly the same as getting it done in the shops, they just have a big machine to make it quicker.

Give it a go, i really enjoy doing it myself. and dont be afraid of damaging your board, just make sure your board base doesnt get too hot. set your iron on mid heat and be patient.

pease Very Happy

Thanks, great advice. After reading that great long thread about the ski road I think I will give it a miss. Staying at the Kempinski so don't think I need to go on it anyway. But might walk to it and have a look.

re: Do you need to wax a new board?

If you have a new board you should really get it waxed and detuned.

The stock wax that comes on the board will only last for one run then it will become grippy.

Also new boards have extremely sharp edges all over, detuning the front will help when carving.

re: Do you need to wax a new board?

Thankyou for your advice too. I really am not that good I bet it would last the whole of my first day compared to your first run. Mine will be in the air for the majority of the time, maybe I should get my bum waxed too! Very Happy

Trust me, I'm a beginner (skied for years but just got my board) and even if your not going to get it waxed I would get it detuned to reduce the risk of you falling.

Oh will definately get it done. Do you know if they do it in places like Xscape, as we are going to go for another lesson before we go?
