Restaurant Prices/Drinks Alps/Dolomites?

Hi everyone

I haven't booked my skiing trip yet .. been to Bansko for the past 3 years and fancied trying somwhere either in the Alps or Dolomites just for a change ..

But .. what with the dramatic fall of the pound/euro I am having serious thoughts about giving that a miss and going back to Bansko .

Just wanted to know if anyone has recently arrived back from Austria/France/Italy or Switzerland and found it not too bad price wise out there!!

Some pointers on the cost of food ...

Hi Funski
We were in Deux Alps over New Year and the skiing was awesome - loads of lovely wide slopes and tons of fantastic snow. We're already looking to rebook for next year.

The basic holiday cost a lot more than our Bulgaria one. Also, lift passes and ski hire were more expensive - our ski packs cost nearly double what we've paid for Pamps. A week's ski school was actually 5 days for just 2 hours per day, but we've decided not to bother booking tuition next time we go.

Prices were sky high - the exchange rate was virtually £1=1 euro when we were there. Beer was 10 euros for a jug (just under 2 pints) and hot chocolate was 5 euros. We were charged 23 euros for two bowls of veg soup and a small plate of chips. All these prices were down in the village, not on the slopes. Most people were taking packed lunches or snacks up with them.

We were half board - and were glad we'd booked that because I reckon it'd have cost us a fortune otherwise. It was fantastic though ...

Funski we are recently back from Sauze d'oulx, Italy, excellent snow, very cheap prices, would recommend, we would have gone to Bansko but conditions not good enough this year (early Jan) look at my reply to Marc the hat lower down page, it was much cheaper than last year in Bansko to eat & drink, only thing against it was more expensive lift pass reflecting much larger ski area and a very basic hotel compared to where we book in Bansko. worth considering for short transfer and very nice ...

Funski this was posted as reply toMarc the hat, We only went to Sause on a last min deal as Bansko didn't have enough snow for us, we are getting into powder in a big way snowboarding so it only snow conditions that took us there, went out on 4th Jan, total cost from Gatwick £350 HB at a 3 star hotel right in town by Cotes lift, hotel was very basic to what we are used to, food was excellent and jolly staff; Hotel Sause. No lift queue at all during the whole week, empty slopes and so much powder, fab easy off piste, very pretty all in tree line, although over to Milky way was above. The lifts are at times basic 2 or 4 man but everything worked, no closure due to 3 full days snow, a lot of the Italians only come out in the sunshine, big choice of runs, we stayed around Sause being snowboarders more fun to play in trees. Mountain cafes were excellent and very cheap, coffee 1.5 euro everywhere or 1 euro in town, bottle water 1 euro on mountain glass or red wine 2 euro, big bowel of pasta and bread oil 6 euro on mountain, real melted hot chocolate 2 euro,at bottom of lift, ski back to town lunch could be had for 3.5 euro, small burger/ large pizza slice, can of coke & chips, I think pint was 4 euro but most pubs have happy hours and the younger folk followed the happy hours around town. Old town very compact and pretty. Email me if you need more info. We would go back and it really was cheap.

Went to Livigno in Italy over new year.
Agree with Snik on prices, only thing that was noticably higher was the lift pass that reflects the skiing available.

Funski, there is just one thing about Sauze, pleasant though it is the people on the slopes aren't much fun, not the same atmosphere as Bansko, given good snow my partner preferred Bansko, also as snowboarders people just weren't as friendly and we did miss the private tuition we couldn't afford it in Sauze at 45 euro each per hour, Bansko was excellent for private lessons and we thank last years Bansko instructor for really getting us into off piste. re: Restaurant Prices/Drinks Alps/Dolomites?

My brother in law always goes to the 3 valleys or Dolomites. Even in the cheapest pubs a 250ml bottle of beer is 6 Euro.... food is highly expensive too.

One thing I'd say about Bansko now vs the opposition, given the pound has taken a hammering its now really highlighting what value Bansko represents cheap drink good cheap foor & cheap lift passes.
Downside its 2,600m max, only 65km runs.

re: Restaurant Prices/Drinks Alps/Dolomites?

Where's me skis, Oh yes very much so, as they have a kinder lift called Sportina, 5 to 10 mins walk, very pleasant to get on and off with lots of blue and some very kind reds in that area you can rent a ski locker up the hill if it makes the walk easier, I would highly recommend for you both, very pretty mountain and so few people, first time I haven't seen any accidents on the mountain so great place for the slightly nervous, I think the ski lessons are much cheaper if booked through tour ...
