First time to Borovets

Hi there.
Me and my Girlfriend are going to Borovets next saturday, As it's our first time out there i was just wondering if some of you have any advice for us.
(i.e How much a meal costs, Are there many ATM's out there that take Maestro cards, Any reviews on the Samokov hotel, etc)
Many thanks
Andrew

Katys,White Magic, Alpina and many other places you can get a meal with drinks for a tenner. Also try the 24hr pizza place near the Ela hotel. Freinds have all stayed in the Samakov and they say it is OK. Have seen on the board that maestro works in the ATMs.

The food was always very good and cheap, our favourite was potatoes and onions, only 4 leva, which is around £2, they are very filling and ive never tasted potatoes like them. we ate there every day for lunch and in the evenings. only got back last sat and want mto go back again !!! you are better off taking sterling as you get a much better rate over ...

Have a fab time.

Do not take the first pair of ski boots offered. If you are going up the mountains get your ski's waxed at the ski depot 5 levs. Probably 2 or 3rd day.You will queue for 45 minute to get on the Gondola at 10am. Depending on your ski school your instructor, you will be taken to restaurants bars etc to have coffee chocolate and lunch. Order as much or as little as you like. They are told by their managers to get u in there. This is not a negative comment but if unaware of it then it could ...

They are told by their managers to get u in there. This is not a negative comment but if unaware of it then it could cause an issue. Incidently these places (in our case) were the most expensive. Do not eat in restaurant/cafe on top of the Gondola. Ski down and then Gondola back up.
Cards work on the ATM. Which is the safest way to get money there. Got a good exchange rate at Tesco on Levs before I went. Meal prices vary a lot. What we did was walk around the area lots of guys trying to get you to into their bars. We went in to have a beer and wine and looked at the set up and menu prices then went on and picked the one we liked. Price range from £30 to £40 average with wine can pay more but never really worth the extra. Pizzas can be good value but burgers etc are reasonable. The Derby is very good food but towards the £40 MARK WITH A BOTTLE OF WINE GOOD FOOD AND NICE MUSIC. Mammacitas is rocking (drinks are 2 4 1 at happy hour) great band. Green King is nice for cosy meal 4 2. Do not expect it to be cheap but do be aware that good value is a different proposition to cheap. Francos has happy hour 10 to midnight with good disco. Plenty of free shots on offer ask the PR guys outside. Never pay more than 2.50 Lev for a pint.
Borovets is like a cup of tea it is how you make it. Like most hols go with hope and caution and expect to spend more money than you thought you would.

re: First time to Borovets

I always use maestro and usually it works out cheaper than pals who take stirling. The exchange rate usually better via the Atm even with a £2 charge! Agree with Johns review of Boro - just ask your instructor if you can meet at 9.30 and you miss the queues!
Enjoy your holiday Smile

Open a Nationwide flex-account and use their debit card abroad - withdrawals are free!

You don't have to use the account for anything other than travel either.

Hi Andrew,

I have skied in Borovets a few times now & absolutely love it!

I was there 2 weeks ago with my boyfriend which was his first time & we‘re already looking for next year!!

Have always stayed in the Samokov which is great, it's not the Ritz but it does the job. Perfect location right next to the gondola station. As people on here have said before the food is a little much to be desired but there is usually something for everyone. Have eaten out a few times and my ...

Have always stayed in the Samokov which is great, it's not the Ritz but it does the job. Perfect location right next to the gondola station. As people on here have said before the food is a little much to be desired but there is usually something for everyone. Have eaten out a few times and my favorites are the Titanic (opposite the Rila) and the Mexican.

The thing that I love about Borovets, is its charactor go with an open mind, you will have a wonderful time!!!

Andrew

There's so much info on past threads, so scroll down and have a good read - between packing Very Happy

ATMs are outside the Rila and in the Flora Hotel. They take maestro. The Samokov also has a bank but no ATMs that I know of.

Check prices of food before ordering and check bill before paying.

There's a thread called Favourite restaurants in Borovets but the cheapest is probably the Alpina - happy hour 5-7.

Any specific questions just ask and have a great time - lots of snow ...

re: First time to Borovets

All I can say is..... We stayed at the Samakov in Jan and the food was excellent. Never a day when there wasn't something for everyone. Occasionally warm, but just use the microwave! Staff very pleaseant, and lets face it, it's much cheaper than other alpine resorts. Go with an open mind, expect the worse and you will be pleasantly suprised and wanting to go back.
