First timers advice - Helmets?

Hi there, be gentle as I'm new!

Going on our first ever Ski holiday to Pamporovo with Inghams in March.

Will probably be asking some really basic (stupid) questions over then next couple of months if I can't find the anwers I need. Apologies in advance.

First query is with regard to ski helmets. Should we get these? Buy or hire in resort? Or are they not needed.

Appreciate opinions may differ, but we are complete novices and any advice would be greatly appreciated ...

Hi Jay and welcome to the board. Boy are you in for a great holiday or what Razz

There are very few stupid question on here - but we often come up with a lot of stupid answers!

I would always recommend the wearing of helmets and I would always recommend buying your own. I have been skiing for 20 years and I always wear one now. Hiring can run the risk of your helmet being damaged by a previous user, or being supplied an ill fitting one, or simply not a good style. Make sure you buy ...

Hiring can run the risk of your helmet being damaged by a previous user, or being supplied an ill fitting one, or simply not a good style. Make sure you buy one that carries the British Safety Standard logo to be sure it's of good quality. Skiing can be a dangerous sport and the more precautions you take the safer you will be.

Besides all of that - it's cool to wear a helmet!

Cool

re: First timers advice - Helmets?

Helmets are not essential, but i've now got one and I wouldn't go back to not having one. If you think that skiing (or boarding) is something you are likely to keep doing, its definately worth buing your own. I'd definately advise to try lots on rather than just measure your head and order off the net, as size, shape and fit do vary alot and you really need to get one that fits properly for it to be most effective. (They keep your ears warm too!) Hope you have a good time!

re: First timers advice - Helmets?

Agree with Pete - helmets are a must - I didn't used to bother but managed to smack my head quite hard - fortunately in fairly snow snow but it could have been nasty - it was a wake up call... If you shop around a bit you will probably get one for not much more than the cost of hiring one for a couple or trips - they're a bit cumbersome to pack but well worth it.

Helmets are a must even for a beginner. You only need to look at What happened to Natasha Richardson to realise this. I can't believe that I was stupid enough to ski without one for a few years. Accidents happen why take a chance?

I agree with Daniel, just look at the Natasha Richardson story!! I had a bad fall a few years ago without a helmet, i thought it was uncool to wear a helmet but i think differently now!

re: First timers advice - Helmets?

Well thanks for the advice, definitely one to add to the kit list (starting to get worried about the 20kg baggage limit!!!).

Believe me Pete, some of my questions are likely to be very stupid, but I'll try to keep my numpty moments to a minimum.

re: First timers advice - Helmets?

Let me try and answer a few before you ask them Jay as many people ask the same questions on their first visit.

MONEY
It's best to take a few Bulgaria Levs with you to get you started. Other than that take UK sterling notes £10 and £20. These need to be clean without any writing on and not ripped otherwise they will not accept them. You can change these at any main hotel lobby and the rate is far better that travellers cheques. One big DO NOT - never change money with strangers no matter ...

It's best to take a few Bulgaria Levs with you to get you started. Other than that take UK sterling notes £10 and £20. These need to be clean without any writing on and not ripped otherwise they will not accept them. You can change these at any main hotel lobby and the rate is far better that travellers cheques. One big DO NOT - never change money with strangers no matter what rate they offer you or you will be conned with old useless money in exchange.

SHOPS
The are a couple of decent supermarkets that will sell most of your daily needs and quite a lot of ski and boarding shops that will cater for everything you will need for skiing. There is also a chemist in the undercover shopping mall between the hotel Perelik and Mourgavets.

TIPPING YOUR INSTRUCTOR
This is of course up to you - but if you are having lessons and you feel your instructor has done a good job then most people club together in their group and chip in. I would suggest 20 levs per person (about £10 each) is a reasonable amount. Instructors wages are pretty low and they do rely heavily on any tips they get.

Any other questions you may have Jay just fire away.

Pete
