Evening all, 1 month to Bansko and counting, starting to get exited.
Quick question, in previous years I have always suffered with 'Thigh Burn' on long reds/blacks meaning that I often have to stop mid run for a rest. I have been going to the gym a little but am not the fittest. Does anyone have any tips on the best exercises to prevent this, or drink's/vitamin's to take to the slopes.
spin is realy good to stop the burn most gyms do it and realy developes the legs although after the first couple of classes you could find it hard to sit down
I have the thigh burn thing too. Pete's right, technique has a lot to do with it. Its kind of like, let the skis turn rather than you turn the skis. But all of this is no good if your plain unfit. I just ski part way down, stop for a fag, then carry on. The other good way to stop the burn, is simply point your skis down hill, go for it and dont turn!!!
Have a bottle of Powerade a day. It is no substitution for training but does help. Also try and go for a massage or two mid week when the pain is at its worst. You will not believe the difference a good massage can make.
Try this exercise:
Stand with your back to a wall, feet about 18 inches away from the wall. Lean back on the wall, keeping your body upright. Slide down the wall by bending your knees (not too far to begin with!). Slowly straighten up, still keeping your back straight and against the wall. Repeat 10 times. Do this 3-5 times a day and your thigh muscles will be much stronger. (oh yes, finish each set with a beer....... )
I only went swimming a couple of times before going (infact the week before) and had no pain what so ever. I dont excerise regularily so was surprised.
Last year I went to the gym for 3 months before (at least 3 times a week) and had really sore legs and knees. At ski school they make you snow plough down the greens all day at a snails pace and it destroys your legs and knees.

This year I never bothered with ski school- and learnt how to parallel turn and skid turn in the ice. Legs take a teenth of the abuse compared to ploughing and makes it miles easier. Next year im just going to go swimming before hand
