Food situation

Hey I was in Borovets last week, and we booked HB, and what a mistake.

We stayed in the Iglika, and the food was to be fair edible, but we ate out on two evenings, and boy the food is so cheap yet so delicious in the restaurants, it ain't worth going HB. We ate in the Mexican restaurant, had starter, main course, and two large beers, and cost me less than £20, and it was gorgeous. I also ate at the one of the other bars (the name of which I have forgotten) and once again the food was ...

My advice to you all would be to eat out as much as poss.

And I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but our ski instructor informed us that the food in the Rila is disgusting, and she said that people often get ill from that hotel cos of the food.

re: Food situation

i have a theory about hotel food
all the restaurants are owned by
the hotel owners
indifferent food in hotel = busy restaurant

re: Food situation

I would say that all tourist should be openminded.
HB and FB basis is for expensive countrys where you can't eat out from the hotel.
Bulgaria is still cheap and my opinion is, just buy BB and explore new things because you can!You still have the option to go to the hotel buffet and eat. So simple!
With my sugestion you help also the simple people and not only the travel agents and hotel owners.

Have been in Bansko last week on BB basis and enjoyd the local food with very cheap prices ...

Never been ill the six years going to Borovets Half board staying at moura and samokov, not the greatest food but enough variety so you wont starve, agree though eating out is a great pleasure with loads of good restaurants to chose from.

re: Food situation

I stayed in the Iglika last year and found the food to be a bit below par.. but edible. I did eat in the hotel a good few nights, but also went out.
I think that most of the reviews are saying the same thing about the hotel food. Basic and lukewarm. Just go out preparing for that. We're used to eating piping hot food in the UK, but I believe that's not the case in BG.

I've never heard of anyone falling ill - but tummies can always go a little wonky on eating perfectly normal food in a different country. Too many people are too quick to jump on the "food poisoning" bandwagon if they get a bit of a dicky tummy.
