Try La Rosiere - A high altitude resort - with an added bonus..you can ski across to La Thuile in Italy. Great wide slopes - not much night life though so may not suit everyone!
Whatever - enjoy!!!

Spent 12 seasons in Tignes/Val1d'isere area, you will not find better skiing !! Perhaps the place is a little souless..
You can in most cases ski to your door. Have also skied Avoriaz and the same applies. I found the ski area more varied in Avoriaz as it is well linked in the `Portes du Soleil', possible to ski in three differant countries on one pass, seven towns each having its own charm, you need good snow though. As an outside idea, try Le Deux Alpe, typical alpine town, atmosphere, ...

Les Houches - we went on the spur of the moment last New Year, just jumped in the car and drove down, deciding to head vaguely for Chamonix with no hotel or anything booked. Anyway, point of the story was we had a fantastic time there - Les houches itself is a nice quiet place, we spent most nights drinking vin chaud in a bar, but Chamonix is just a free bus ride away if you do want more, and there is plenty of greart skiing all the way up the vally from Argentiere to Les Houches

re: French Resorts

I agree with oldie ski, I loved La Rossiere. And as for the chalet thing my sister has worked in them for about 5 years and she says most of the time people get on ok. We stayed in her chalet in Austria in summer and it was just like staying in a small hotel, we didn't really see much of anybody else apart from at meal times. The only thing I find strange about chalets is that they seem to be more expensive but you don't get a choice of meal in the evening.
