Heel Lift in ski and snowboard boots

OK, dug out a pair of boots I used last year and immediately felt they were too small. Had twenty minutes on the cross trainer wearing them and they weren't slacking off at all and my toes were starting to tingle.

If someone had hired those boots from me back in the day, I would have said, 'too small' no questions, but the thing is, I wore them last year. Strange

Anyway, I was idly looking at Gumtree an hour ago ... and I'm now the proud owner of a new pair of snowboard boots. Still got the Boa lace system, they're a much better fit, and in brilliant condition (used for a few days, decided I didn't like it and abandoned them in a cupboard).

The only thing is, (and I know that's a hell of a big preamble to get to the actual question, but hey ho) I'm getting a bit of heel lift. I went ahead with the purchase 'cos I know there are various ways to combat this, but has anyone here ever used any?

There's everything from little heel things you wear to special socks to those SHL pads, but has anyone used any and what are your thoughts ...?

Are you sure you will still get significant heel lift when your in bindings on snow? I think I could ride in wellies and it wouldn't much matter, it's not something I have noticed, I did read somewhere and it might be on uTube about people cutting horseshoe shaped cardboard packing placed between inner and outer boot. good luck with the fitting.

I've not used this before, but have it under good word that it works quite well:

Hi Rob,

How's things? If the boots are relatively new then the inners will probably be made from that intuition foam stuff - and you can heat-mould them several times. Turn on the oven at about 75-80 degrees, take the inners out of boots, take the footbeds out of the inners and put the inner in the oven for 6-7 mins. Then put them back together and wear them for 15 minutes. The heat makes the inner expand, and become a bit gel-like, so it might re-shape to a better fit.

Other than that ...

Other than that - Val (my gf) has just bought some footbeds to fit in her ski boots - they're called superfeet. They come in different shapes to match different shaped feet - and aren't cheap, at about £30, but might help? You need to try the different shapes, they sell them at Brighams. They will also custom make footbeds for you there, but at £50+ you may as well just have bought yourself some new boots that fitted properly in the first place!
Very Happy
Matt

re: Heel Lift in ski and snowboard boots

Cheers matt,

It's not that they don't fit, they're perfect everywhere bar the slight lift. It's my weird feet! narrow at heel, wide in the middle, either get good heel grip and too tight round the mid, or perfect in the mid, loose at the back.

Off to Xscape in a wee bit, will have a mooch in the shops.

You could also try glue some neoprene strips to the outer side of the inner boot on either side of your achilles?

My Salomon boots have something built into them - quite comfy

re: Heel Lift in ski and snowboard boots

Yeah, my feet are a little odd too - I tried a load of different manufacturers and only one fitted right (Salomon, Synapse if you're interested - very happy and would recommend if you like a stiff boot!).
I'm just thinking about this problem, and what is actually happening...
Is it the inner that lifts up or your foot inside the inner? My inners have a strip of velcro on the back of the heel, so there's no way they could lift.

If it's your foot inside the inner, and if the heat moulding doesn't help then I reckon Garrick's suggestion sounds best.

re: Heel Lift in ski and snowboard boots

@ Matt - I now have the 2010/2011 Synapse after bad experiences with 32 Prospects (too small and heel lift) and Vans Encore with the Boa lacing system (heel-lift).

The Synapse Like other Salomon boots has the achilies support already made into the inner boot. I now have zero heel lift and the most comfortable pair of boots I have ever owned. They feel like you favourite pair of old trainers that you just can go without.

On holiday in France last year I went into one of the stores to find any sort of heel-lift prevention. I was pointed in the direction of the ski service desk and was offered custom insoles and modification to the inner boot which would see me right for a "neat" price of €80. I turned it down on the grounds that all they would do is stick home-made shapes of neoprene to the out side fo the inner boot.
I got back from the holiday and bought the Synapse in post season sales after having 4 or 5 pairs of boots properly fitted.

re: Heel Lift in ski and snowboard boots

Just visited Boardwise in Glasgow to seek some advice and after a wee chat about moulding etc, the incredible staff in there gave me some pads that should do the trick. All for the princely sum of 73p (all the change I had in my pocket) into the charity box. What a nice shop. Buy things there now.
