re: Helmets

I am a helmet fan. Before I wore one, I knocked myself out a couple of times when snowboarding so decided to invest. I bought one from Aldi, which, although cheap, does afford some protection and is better than nothing at all. It all comes down to speed of impact but if you have something on your head, it will improve your chances. I wouldn't ski now without a helmet and don't understand reluctance of others to ski without one. I agree it is personal choice, but impact is not usually your ...

WFM - the idea that more expensive helmets are safer is a myth. I'm not an expert on Ski helmets but with motorcycle helmets (and think what they are designed to do!) the £60 helmets pass the same safety standards as the £600 ones - nomatter what the guy trying to sell you the more expensive one says! There is the odd one that has additional features (which are usually a bit gimmicky), but generally they all have the same safety standards.

It's an easy sell, and I've fallen for it myself. "Do you want to risk your life to save £100?". Usually not true though.

Fit is important though, and more expensive helmets often have better features (venting etc) and can be more comfortable. If you find one you like for £20 that fits and is comfortable though then go for it - as long as it meets the relevant safety regulations.
