If you aren't happy with who you've seen so far ask for a second opinion. From where you are, look at perhaps going to Leicester or Birmingham where you have the teaching hospitals, as theoretically they should have the most upto date knowledge. When you have your consultation, go in with a written list of questions as sometimes your mind can go blank when you get in there and just make sure each of those questions is answered. Also bear in mind that it won't always be the consultant that you see, establish who it is that you are talking to, if it is one of their team and you aren't happy then ask to see the 'boss' himself.

I damaged my knee Feb 2008. I heard it click when I fell. thought I had damaged it. Anyway when I returned home went to Doc's and they said I would have an appointment with my local Hospital, plus I would never Ski again. Still waiting for apointment! So a week after I did it I got fed up of waiting and went private. The same day I had a MRI scan and results the week later. I had danaged the Legiment in my knee orignally I wa stold it maybe an opportaion. I've had 5 Physio sessions and it seems to be so much better. I can walk almost normal. It does still hurt if I do too much walking or excersie. On the up side I will be able to ski again. Which I'm very pleased about.
Don't leave it. it's best to get it sorted to start with rather than leave it and it gets worse.
Hope this helps.
Have a look at which specialists work at the Royal Orthopaedic in Birmingham.
We have the Royal National Orthopaedic near to us in Stanmore and I used a chap called Rob Pollock - did microfracture on one knee and excised a plica on the other. He did say I could ski this year (having done the microfracture in September), but it was my choice not to. He did an MRI in January, you could hardly see where he'd done the work - it was all healing so well.
